I was mowing the other day when all of a sudden my little self-propelled almost died on me.  It lost what seems to be around half it's power and RPMs.  It will stay running but sounds weak. On the plus side it's much quieter.  I cleaned the filter and plug, which were not bad anyways.  The difference in performance was a sudden change.  If I had to throw out a guess, it jumped a tooth on the timing gear.  The question is should I go with this assumption? If I am right will I need to replace the gear or can I just re-align it?  Last question, is there anything I need to know before I attempt this.

Dump out the fuel and put fresh gasoline in it first.  Try that, and then get back to us

Also might consider that you possibly got a bit of trash in a carburetor needle valve or jet.

Yeah, it didn't jump cam time.

It's possible you snagged something with the blade and partly sheared the flywheel key which will change the ignition timing.

If it's running well but slow, check the governer links and springs for obstructions or breakage.

The gas is less than year old with Stabil in it.  I will get a new can though.  I will look into the and throttle cables.  If it's the carb, than I will mess around with that.  Thank you for the replies.

edit - spelling of the gas treatment.

Check fuel filter. Make sure there's no build up from cut grass on the blades and belt. Clean the carburetor
