Yamaha 2000 watt inverter generator. Fresh oil change, good spark plug, clean filter. Ran for 22 hours perfectly and now it is sputtering. Idle bounces but then it catches itself intermittently. The longer it continues to run the worse the problem will get.

Had a recent tune up and carb was cleaned. Gas is new and fresh.  It is less than a year old but has between 500 and 600 hours on it. Stupidly I never filled out the warranty card because "it's a Yamaha, no way will it have any problems." Any experts here know what would cause this?

Should have bought a Honda.

Did you do the tune-up/carb clean?    Try filling out the warranty card with the actual date you bought it.  Most places will honor the warranty as long as you have proof of purchase.

When my 4stroke Honda does that, I spray Sea Foam into the carb, let it sit for a while, and then fire it up.  Smokes like hell, but smooths right out.

Try loosening the gas cap while it is running.

It's not uncommon for the gas cap to not vent properly. A vacuum gradually builds up in the fuel tank, eventually leaning out the fuel supply enough to cause a misfire (or to kill the engine outright).

I have to do the same thing for a 2 stroke Stihl each year.

It sounds like you have fuel starvation.

Unlike their Yamaha counterparts, the Honda inverter models don't have a dedicated fuel shut-off valve - So it's almost impossible to empty the carb bowl by running the engine until it dies.

The Yamahas have a fuel tank gauge, unlike the Hondas.

Unlike Yamaha, Honda declares the warranty void if you install a propane or NG conversion kit.

Yamaha doesn't make you pay extra for the DC battery charging cables.

I had the same issue with my Honda. Ran a rick mixture of Lucas fuel treatment and it cleanned up my issues.

I have the same Yamaha.  Mine did this too.  It was the oil level sensor doing its job.  It does burn a little oil.  Pisses me off.  Check oil level.

When it starts acting up tilt the unit to one side and it should run normal.  That will let you know for sure.

If it's like most low oil sensors, you can temporarily defeat it by unplugging the wire coming from it.

This was it!!!! I checked the oil again (had changed it with fresh synthetic the day before) and it was low by a half cup or so. Topped off and fixed the issue

My brand new Hondas just did this.  Each had less than 14 hours on them.

Just got back from the Honda dealer... Turns out I purchased bad gas somewhere and it shut em down.

Drained tanks, and carbs, new gas from good source, started right up.

Yep, everything I've heard about the comparison between the two is that they're roughly equal in reliability but the Yamaha has the edge in features and often cost.

Then again if you walk around NYC for the day you'll see so many food carts you won't be able to count 'em all, and every one I've seen has a beat to fuck nasty old Honda EU series chained to it just putt-puttin along.

Interesting thread, I have a Honda 2000 but little tidbits of info regarding oil pressure sensor deal on the yamaha may come in handy somewhere down the line
