I've got a 1938 Chevy Sedan rusting away. I've been thinking about what to do with it. The body isn't that bad but restoring it to good condition would be very pricey. So I've thought about turning it into a rat rod. What does the hive mind think of rat rods?

There are a lot of cool ones and there are some that are pretty lame. I like most of them though.

Pretty much covers my opinion on them as well.  I'd say if you're going to spend more than $10K on it, don't bother making it look "rat".  Spend a little more and build a nice hot rod.

Helped build this one.  51 GMC body on a 86 suburban frame.

Your car. Your money. Do what you want. Not everyone will like what you did. Someone will point and laugh. But if you like it, fuck them... I drive a bro dozer for a work truck.

Doing a nice rat rod will still cost money. Unless you have tons laying around, sell the car and save the money.

Done to death. Only good if someone looks at it and goes "WTF did you do that?"

I have a same era chevy that I'm saving for a project....my favorite older body style vehicle besides some old 20's and 30's stuff. Do you have any more pics, specifically of the interior?

I had a great Uncle that used one as  a field tool on his blueberry farm in Maine.

In the good old days you didn't set out to build a rat rod, its what you ended up with when you ran out of money to build.

Now people spend thousands and plan to end up with a POS.  And faux-tina, give me a break.

But some of them are cool.

Awesome. I'd never have fun with a restored car. I'd be worried about scratching it and dings. That's just character on a rat rod.

I show my challenger at car shows around here.
Several rat rods show up also from their club.
Different strokes for different folks, but I appreciate them for what they are.
I think they are cool, especially when some thought is put into the mods or theme.

Some of them look pretty damn cool but I would still prefer a rust free version of even those.

If the rust is fake it's not a rat rod.

I've been thinking of building one for a daily driver.

I'm thinking differently than your typical hot rod style...  I'm thinking "Econo-Rat" that maybe runs on a GM 231 -  3.8L V6, carburetor, manual tranny, geared for overdrive / highway driving only (low torque), and cram it all into a small, fairly aerodynamic body/frame, and gut out most all the creature comforts for weight reduction (fuel economy increase), and drive it until she falls apart!

Hopefully get 25 to 35 mpg, and have an easy-to-repair & maintain car that doesn't have 80,000 electrical sensors and computer controls to replace, or spend 3 days diagnosing an intermittent electrical problem.

What kind of styling?  That sounds like just a weird homebuilt car, not really a rat rod.  The "rod" part means hot rod.

Neat to look at, but I wouldn't want one personally.   I'm more of a "I don't give a damn what it looks like as long as it corners hard and makes decent power" kind of guy.

Those are all three cool, but two of them are anything but "rat".  That bottom one doesn't have a single piece of metal on it that looks more than a year old.

If "doing it right" is building up a pristine 1930s Ford with brand new body work and stuffing a Chevrolet engine inside, I'll stick with rat rods.

Making a driver out of a rusting hulk - ok.

Painted rust, purposely faded and "weathered" paint, and random antique bottle caps glued to running boards - bullshit.

Don't have any handy.  Interior is all original.  Some Gauges were rebuilt so they worked but the original faces were used.  Had to build a new tunnel.

Depends on the workmanship.
If the fabrication and planning is done right, cool.
But when I saw one with 3/4" rebar for steering arms, no.
There is a reason you bury rebar in concrete........

I think Roadkill proved if you drive a rat rod around LA, the girls talk to you.  The Lambo Aventador with the other guy drove with him?  The guys all went to talk to him.

I've got my late-grandpa's '59 F-100 rusting out in a garage right now. I'm trying to figure how to finish it on the cheap. Bed is roached from him hauling batteries. Tailgate isn't original. Front bumper is twisted up from hitting so many deer. Has a Mercury 292 in it with a 3 on the tree.

First one in the group of pics that were posted a couple after my post... Steve Darnell built it, and he drives the shit out of it, too.

A bunch of their Rat Rods are in this Mad Max-ish music video, Darnell has a cameo, guy at the poker table in the cowboy hat.
