[ARCHIVED THREAD] - What does arf think of rat rods? (Page 1 of 2)

| I've got a 1938 Chevy Sedan rusting away. I've been thinking about what to do with it. The body isn't that bad but restoring it to good condition would be very pricey. So I've thought about turning it into a rat rod. What does the hive mind think of rat rods? |

There are a lot of cool ones and there are some that are pretty lame. I like most of them though. Pretty much covers my opinion on them as well. I'd say if you're going to spend more than $10K on it, don't bother making it look "rat". Spend a little more and build a nice hot rod. |
Your car. Your money. Do what you want. Not everyone will like what you did. Someone will point and laugh. But if you like it, fuck them... I drive a bro dozer for a work truck.
Doing a nice rat rod will still cost money. Unless you have tons laying around, sell the car and save the money. |

Helped build this one. 51 GMC body on a 86 suburban frame. http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/a531/pavelow164781/2260436A-1463-437C-828A-8561658AFD3B_zpscm7f2vec.jpg I have a same era chevy that I'm saving for a project....my favorite older body style vehicle besides some old 20's and 30's stuff. Do you have any more pics, specifically of the interior? |

I've been thinking of building one for a daily driver.
I'm thinking differently than your typical hot rod style... I'm thinking "Econo-Rat" that maybe runs on a GM 231 - 3.8L V6, carburetor, manual tranny, geared for overdrive / highway driving only (low torque), and cram it all into a small, fairly aerodynamic body/frame, and gut out most all the creature comforts for weight reduction (fuel economy increase), and drive it until she falls apart! Hopefully get 25 to 35 mpg, and have an easy-to-repair & maintain car that doesn't have 80,000 electrical sensors and computer controls to replace, or spend 3 days diagnosing an intermittent electrical problem. |

What kind of styling? That sounds like just a weird homebuilt car, not really a rat rod. The "rod" part means hot rod. |

That bottom one doesn't have a single piece of metal on it that looks more than a year old. |

Doing a nice rat rod will still cost money. Unless you have tons laying around, sell the car and save the money. Ouch, but probably true now. |

I've seen it driving around in WA. Neat vehicle. |

Rat Rods are for people who don't want to do it right If "doing it right" is building up a pristine 1930s Ford with brand new body work and stuffing a Chevrolet engine inside, I'll stick with rat rods. |

| I've got my late-grandpa's '59 F-100 rusting out in a garage right now. I'm trying to figure how to finish it on the cheap. Bed is roached from him hauling batteries. Tailgate isn't original. Front bumper is twisted up from hitting so many deer. Has a Mercury 292 in it with a 3 on the tree. |
