Driving home from work, found a mother turtle smashed by a car with 4/5 eggs destroyed. Rescued the 5th egg which seems intact. Warm sunny day and there was still reflexive movement in mom's tail when I moved her off the road. She was a painted turtle. I have the egg in some moist soil in a shallow bucket in the garage. Plan to release back into the pond from which mom came if it hatches.
Anything else I can do to help this egg hatch?

Remember in nature, many eggs are laid for a few to survive. And not all baby turtles will survive. Some live many months without eating. In nature many babies are eaten and the weak ones don't last long. But those that hatch are a joy and those that survive may grow fast. And some give us joy for a year and die for no reason we can identify. Remember, not many turtles survive to become adults. So don't blame yourself if you tried and your eggs don't hatch or a baby dies.

Get a flowerpot full of dirt, and bury it in the sun with the egg around 6" deep or so.

If it doesn't make it, I wouldn't sweat it, they're an aquatic rabbit of sorts.

If you want it to hatch do this:

Cut the bottom out of an ice cream pail.  Bury the pale in your garden, but leave the top sticking out about 2".  Fill the pail with sand to grade (leaving the 2" to capture the hatchling) and bury the egg a couple inches deep.  I don't know the gestation period, but I'd wait at least a couple weeks then start checking it daily.

Edit:  Needs full sun.

Carry it in your rectum to keep it at the optimum temperature.

You will be able to tell when it hatches.
