Is 10 ga steel thicker than 12 ga or the other way around?

Usually, the lower the number, the thicker the wire, rope, sheet of metal, etc.  In this case, yes, 10ga. is thick than 12ga.

Like electrical or welding cable as well...lower number = thicker material.

10 ga. sheet metal is approximately 1/8 inch.
