I borrowed one from a friend. I haven't shot it yet, but if I like it and decided to buy one.. Which generation do I want?

You are going to probably get 100 different opinions, but here is mine.

I like the 9mm Gen3 19, however, in a .40 cal, I prefer the Gen4.

Why?

The feel of the gen 3 grip on the 19 is better to me than the 4. But the double spring of the Gen4 40 is much better.

In 9 mm, the Gen 3 spring is just right.

Pretty sure he'll only get four.

I've had both. 3rd gen is perfectly fine, but I like the grip better on the 4th gen.

I ran a heavier recoil spring on the 3rd gen, so the new setup on the 4th gen feels about the same to me.

I changed the trigger face on both from the serrated to the smooth one from a G17.

My fave as well. I think I've owned them all.

Some don't like the finger grooves and thumb depression, but I do. I think the Gen4/RTF is too abrasive. As always, YMMV.

I prefer the Gen 4 grip, but mine needed a little break in.  The Gen 4 spring is stronger than it needs to be for a 9mm.

I've got both. Gen4 all the way. RTF2 gen 3 is also tittieburgers.

The grip texture on the 4 is a major improvement IMO.

Gen 4 on my hip now.

I used a 17 in the academy, as I prefer the full grip and longer sight radius, and I can conceal it, but HH6 got me this for daily carry.

I have a 3rd gen and 4th Gen.  I like everything better about the 4th gen except the trigger.  The 3rd gen trigger has a crispier break and shoots a little better (but it's a 19c too).

The 3rd gen also has a stronger brass ejection.  Mildly loaded ammo brass just dribbles out of my 4th gen.

I don't own a Glock gun, but out of curiosity, if they are "perfection" why are there 4 generations?

For that matter why are there even upgrades at all, wouldn't any alteration be downgrades because "perfection".

Look at anything that's over 30 years old.  With the exception of perhaps can openers (Swing-Away or GTFO), technology improves, yo.

I asked a similiar question several days ago about which is the better of the two and really never got a direct answer.
That being said after reading OP's post I went cruising around over at GunBroker and found several NIB gen 3 19's for under $500.

I like the gen 4. I have smaller hands and I like the bigger mag release on the gen 4. I've also put a Vickers extended mag release in it. I also like the grip texture on the gen 4 and I feel it has a bit less perceived recoil than the gen 3.

I bought my gen 3 right as the gen 4 was coming out. I avoided it because i heard they still had some bugs to work out, and some accessories weren't compatible with the gen 4. Over all I'm very happy with my decision, but I did end up putting sandpaper tape on one side of the grip for extra texture. I have small hands, and find the gen 4 to be slightly better fit to my hand. My buddy just got a gen 4 and has stated that his ejection is weak and erratic fwiw.

I shot both, and liked the Gen4 better, the larger mag release and the grip texture are far superior on the Gen 4. Can't go wrong either way IMO.

My experience is the reverse. My G3 had a decent trigger, but my G4 has a much crisper trigger break. There is a slight drawback that the trigger pull feels a little heavier than the G3. I put a Glock '-' connector in it and it feels pretty damn good right now.

So, in all - the only things I've done to my G4 are swap the stock trigger and bar for a G17 unit with the smooth face, swap the connector for a Glock '-' connector and put some night sight on it.

I also did the same stuff to my G4 G26 so that they're the same.

No ejection issues with either of my G4 Glocks in the year + since I've changed over.

I'd wait for the Gen 5.  It's going to be manufactured in Germany.  I heard it's going to be porcelain.   It's probably going to cost more than you make in a month, though.

If I shoot four different Glock 19 pistols, two will have good triggers, two won't; and two will be accurate in my hands, and two won't.  And not necessarily any correlation between the trigger and accuracy.

Still, Glock 19 still holds the belt in its class.

OP, get the Gen 4.

ETA:  The VP9 is awesome.  PREMIUM engineering and all.  Overbuilt.  So hot right now.  VP9.
