Bought a small cheap chest freezer about 10 years ago. It's been chugging along fine over the years. Noticed a few times the lights were off due to circuit box. Always no big deal, and with a quick flip all was good again! The past month I have just glanced a few times to see if the lights were in order, all seemed fine. A few days ago I go to add a few items, and was almost knocked out by the smell of rotting meat. It appears the little thing stopped working a few weeks back, but all the lights stayed normal. That was the single worst dump trip I have ever made! Had to stop in the boonies to transfer the rotting product to trash bags. Never new Cornish game hens could be used as hand grenades So don't be a dumbass like me and just rely on the purdy lights as proof your freezers working. ![]() |

My mother in law had half a cow in a chest freezer in her garage, and somehow it got unplugged. By the time they found it, it was rotten. She addressed the situation by just letting it be. That chest freezer sat there for three years, and NOBODY dared open it. Finally, she got some neighborhood kids to haul it away. In a way, I'm kind of sad... I kinda wanted to open that at some point, just to see what it looked like after three years of sealed rotting. |

We threw away about $500 the same way, one month ago. BTW, your avatar is really disturbing. This. And I know it's Yolandi, and she tries to be disturbing on purpose, but the whole gnawing on the hunk of bloody whatever-that-thing-is in juxtaposition with the subject of your post adds an extra element of WTF to the whole thing. |

Quoted: Indoor outdoor thermometer with the 4 foot probe. You still have to look at it though. http://www.webstaurantstore.com/taylor-5327-indoor-outdoor-thermometer/6085327.html Maybe instead of the outside thermometer a probe that plugs into the same AC outlet as the freezer that sets the buzzer when AC power is lost. Probably best to have the internal thermometer and the AC probe. It wouldn't need much more than a relay, a very simple IC and a thermistor, could probably be built for under a buck in China, maybe a couple of bucks here, and should sell for $15-20 or more. Of course I am not an inventor, and don't care to be an inventor, if anybody likes the idea feel free to use it, just remember where you got it. |

I wonder if there would be a market for a "freezer alert device". Something that incorporates a thermometer (maybe two) and an annoying buzzer. Probe either inside the freezer or outside near the motor, if the inside tempt gets too high, or the temp near the motor too low the buzzer goes off. Maybe instead of the outside thermometer a probe that plugs into the same AC outlet as the freezer that sets the buzzer when AC power is lost. Lol There are dozens on the market Wireless temperature probes with current and high temperature, and programmable temp alert |

just like message waiting lights.... never trust them... lights...
If you think you should have had a message ... check your voice mail... sometimes the light gets glitched... Seems to go for other lights like those in the freezer... Had a freezer in the basement... where the kids rooms were... they got into the ice cream bars and left the door open... Yep... had to dump all the rest... |

The problem with all of these "temperature monitors" and "freezer alarms" that everyone keeps posting, is that they are all battery powered and, in purest "Darwin" form, are almost certain to fail when most needed due to someone neglected to change the battery.
Has anyone seen one that actually runs on AC? |

I like the battery option better. |

NVM . . . found one . . .
SUPCO (Sealed Unit Parts Company) Model TA2 - 120VAC
Needs to be plugged in on a separate circuit from the device it is protecting. |

I have an even cheaper one, it as a probe that goes into the freezer, and it sits on top. It displays the current temp, and you can press buttons to cycle through the max and min temps. A friend of mine had the same thing happen to him. I'm getting everyone a freezer thermometer thingie that you can see from the outside. Here's the one I have http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B0Q4AGS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 |

I like the battery option better. Me too. Plus, we have electrical outages a lot in this area, my thermometer will have max and min temps which is useful. My wireless outdoor thermometer quit working, the outdoor wireless part. I think I would be hesitant to get one of those as well. My freezer is in the mudroom, I walk by it all the time so I'm not worried about the battery going out. I'll notice right away. |

Ideally you want one that will let you know if the temp goes up then freezes again in case you lose power while out of town or something. Freezer alarms are a great idea. Something else I've done for freezers in remote locations, is buy a gallon of cheap ice cream. Power can go out in some places for days, weeks even. When it comes back on your chest freezer will refreeze. Get rid of half of the gallon bucket of ice cream. Eat it, toss it, whatever you want. Just so that its down to half way in the bucket. Then put it on it's side, on top, in the chest freezer. If you come back and it's refrozen with the ice cream shifted, don't eat anything in that freezer. |

Really, this is a "No shit, why didn't I think of that!" tip. I have observed that ice cream does this, but never thought of any ways that could be useful or somehow benefit me. Your tip is actually a really good "improvised kludge" (fast, cheap, and effective) for a specific situation -- good idea! (And I get to eat ice cream, which is even better than ordering a gadget off Amazon!) |
