I've told this story before.
The guys at the VFW were buying round after round for the "Vets". Maybe too much? I finally stood up and bought a round for the "non vets". I made a toast to them and said, . "There is no one here that did it on his own. I drank at one once before I joined the military. It's actually the only time I've drunk at one. They hosted shows for local bands to play. We played one and I got shithoused for a quarter a beer in 2006. Joined in 2007. |

They don't care as long as you buy beer and behave yourself. The VFW halls around here are pretty much old school beer joints and dance halls. |

How is a non vet at a VFW? A "guest" is what we call them. They sign in under a member and leave when they do. At least that how it is in my Post (3968). There are other events open to the public where everyone is welcome. Like this weekend after the Parade, we have a BBQ just because. (If you're in the area stop by, mention Arfcom and i will buy you a beer. I'll be the one in the "Cracker Jacks") |

I thought the VFW was only for vets. And family members. My grandfather was a vet, so I'm a member. They're not too strict although they tighten up on the guests if they start having asshat problems. You do have to have a membership card to get in. Door opens when you slide your card in. |

I know the one in Beaverdale allows anyone in.
They won't ask if you served, had family that served, or even support the troops. It's a real boring place. Went there during an Iowa vs Iowa State game, and there was maybe 15 people there. They had a big TV showing the game also, and the bartender pours some stiff drinks. |
