Am I the only one who builds an AR, then likes it and wants to build ANOTHER one... EXACTLY like it? I've done this with 3 different types of builds already (2 piston, 2 "standard type middies", 2 FF's). Then I wind up coming to my senses and selling one off. But what is with the obsession of doing the SAME build twice?? I'm stumped here (and need to stop doing it haha).
Maybe it's the "well I always have an identical backup" mentality?
IDK... I must be crazy

Ya, kinda. Mine are in different calibers though.

One is enough. Plenty of different flavors to try

I had two (or more) of everything until my boating accident, OP.  If not exactly the same, close enough to have interchangeable parts.

If I could afford multiple M16s I would but short of winning the lottery I think I'm stuck with just the one.

I used to believe in "One is none, two is one"

That works great until you realize that "1=0 and 2=1" doesn't make a whole lot of sense because mathematically you end up with 2=1=0. You're back to where you started with 0!  Three would be the bare minimum, but who wants to operate at the minimum? Best to go with four just to be safe.

So...I need more rifles is what you're saying... I'm ok with this.

Training gun and using gun. All guns should come in pairs.

I have owned five ARs. All of which were of quite different configurations. They had some similarities but they all had different handguards, pistol grips, sights, optics, ect.

That being said if I had the money or the space I would love to have a few duplicates.

Meh, similar yet different is more me. I want another 12.5" but it'll be a lightweight with fixed carry handle/fsb with a 4x ACOG-like optic. My current 12.5" has a Noveske Crusader barrel, 12" FF handguard, 4x optic, and 45° irons and weighs in well over 9#. I also want to SBR my Henry .22LR to match my Ranch Hand yet it'll be scoped and ~10" barrel

I've got doubles of lots of things, but not of ARs.  They all have a difference.  Caliber, length, etc.

My AR blasters I wouldn't mind having two of the same to take to a class, but I'm ok.

I want a second precision bolt gun before my barrel change so I don't have to stop shooting long range.  It's only money

If you are more about preparedness and less about gunz:

Minimum number of calibers for rifle and pistol
Choose most common calibers and platforms, leaning towards munitions used by your local military
Rifles share same length gas system
rifles share as many parts as possible ie ar15 and ar308 platforms
pistols are ideally duplicates and ideally share mags ie glock 19/17
pistols should be easily and completely concealable from wandering eyes, for each carrier

1 rifle for each person and 1 extra rifle shared between every two people ie group of 4 able bodied has 6 rifles
Same for handguns

2000 rounds per rifle as emergency. This is not to train with when shtf- that is extra
500 rounds per handgun as above.
10 mags loaded minimum per rifle
5 mags same as above handgun
Then stop buying stuff.

Train. As a group.
Do not buy rifle for grandma who can’t lift the remote.
Bare bones would be .22s. Not ideal, but a group defending themselves with .22s makes a terrible target compared to the guy with a golf club.

I've done it.

I have two AR's, one bought as a 6.8, changed to a better barrel. I bought the second one in 5.56, changed it to a 6.8, both have the exact same Magpul furniture and same Aimpoints.

I have two Marlin model 60's

Three Glock 21's

A Rem 870 and Mossy 930, both 12 gauge

My second SLR-95 is coming Tuesday

The only odd-ball is my Rem 700 SPS Tactical .308

Weapon and ammo familiarity among my "non-gun nut" family members is a plus.
