Reed and Malloy didn't need BDUs, body armor, Kevlar lids, and M4s to do their job.

They wore those sharp black service uniforms and peaked caps.

I guess you missed the episode where they were SWAT and had a coverall type uniform, ball caps and AR-15s.

I watched that show sitting on the floor in front of my Dad in his recliner.

Yes, "suppressing the sniper" with a .38 was impressive.

Policing was a lot different back then.  Now you have "You will respect mah authority" or "Give me your cell phone. You're under arrest for interferring with police business."

Pete Malloy: You know what this is?

Jim Reed: Yes sir, it's a police car.

Pete Malloy: This black and white patrol car has an overhead valve V8 engine. It develops 325 horsepower at 4800 RPM's. It accelerates from 0 to 60 in seven seconds; it has a top speed of 120 miles an hour. It's equipped with a multi channeled DFE radio and an electronic siren capable of admitting three variables, wale, yelp, and alert. It also serves as an outside radio speaker and public address system. The automobile has two shotgun racks, one attached to the bottom portion of the front seat, one in the vehicle trunk. Attached to the middle of the dash, illuminated by a single bulb is a hot sheet desk. Fastened to which you will always make sure is the latest one off the teletype before you ever roll.

Jim Reed: Yes sir.

Pete Malloy: It's your life insurance and mine. You take care of it and it'll take care of you.

Jim Reed: Yes sir. You want me to drive?

Navy blue thank you. And they wore BDU's and carried M-16's once. And the threat level was lower then.

No talking tactics, but the workings of the show was very much my department.
They way they were dispatched, handled calls, and paperwork.
It was like whoever started my department watched that show and took notes.

I loved all those shows when I was a kid.  When Emergency! would come on my Mom would turn up the TV to get my attention.  Once I heard the alarm tones I would come running like a streak of shit.  All of those shows had a huge impact on the public and many agencies adopted the practices shown in the programs.  Hell it had an impact on me.  I ended up in police work.

There is a great (boring to most people) episode where Reed does what is probably an illegal search of a dwelling. The entire episode revolves around a motion to suppress hearing. While the law has obviously changed since then, it was pretty spot on to how the process works and how each party does stuff.

I started watching CHP's on METV as I never saw it when it was on TV back then.
Man,the scripts are just terrible.
Watched one episode where there was a huge car accident which was caused by "black ice" on a gravel road in the middle of summer.
Hate to see all those classic cars wrecked.

Julie London [Dix on Emergency] inspired me to later grow up to date older women.I just loved them,no drama.

They never fired their weapons on CHiP's. At least not that I recall.   I remember just one episode where one officer drew his revolver after getting his butt  kicked (it wasn't any of the primary characters).  Still didn't fire it, just pointed it at the bad guy who ran off.  I want to say the revolver was either a Diamond Back or a Python.
