Hello everyone, in putting up a wooden fence, can you use a sealer on the wood then paint it, or paint it first then seal it...Thank you

normally sealer first. with some paints, a sealer is not necessary.

Use an opaque stain. It looks like paint, but it soaks in better.

i'd second that. it is less prone to cracking and peeling it will also better highlight the wood grain. You can then apply a light coat of UV water seal every few years.

First..

What type of wood have you used?

Treated #2 pine has to dry out for up to 6 months or more..

Treated #1 is KDAT..  Kin dried after treatment... It can be painted immediately

All wood must be dry...  including Cedar..

Don't use a wood sealer..  Always prime your wood with a good oil base exterior primer. Then your desired finish coat.. may I suggest a good acrylic?  Never use oil base as your finish coat in an exterior application Alkyds "oil base" Paints are mildew friendly and you'll have a mess on your hands. If you don't use an acrylic, pick a good ext latex..  Sherwin Williams makes a 20 year warranty Super Paint that I use all the time.

Good Luck  [:)]

edited to add.. I say dont use a sealer, because you sound like your sold on painting..  The sealer would be fine the without paint.
