How long does it take to disappear from the body? Wife took some during her cold/flu about 5 weeks ago, and blames it for her weight gain.

RN says it can do that with a high amount of certainty.

Stay out of the sun.

It really is nasty shit, but a very effective anti-inflamitory.

My dog was on prednisone and she put on weight.

Then again, she liked to eat marshmallows too.

Prednisone don't give a fuck about your exercise . Doesn't work that way.

Depending on how long she was on it - certainly.

If short term (< 1 mo) it really should not cause a major weight gain.

Only had two runs of pill packs.  Was very effective the first time, not so much the second run.  It is known for weight gain.

Duration and dosage?  Did she taper off or stop abruptly?  If taken for an extended period of time (>3-4 weeks) it can take the HPT axis a few months to rebound.

I just took a round of pred for some bad plantar fasciitis.  I'm also only eating about 1500 calories a day and going to the gym.

I lost 3 pounds the week I was on it.

Calories in calories out, no matter what drug you are taking.

It's out your system after a few days, and weight gain with prednisone is definitely possible but that's for people on the drug long term. People using it to treat cancer, crones disease, and other inflammatory diseases. People on it for a week Bc they have a chest cold..... Sounds unlikely.  She probably gained weight from inactivity and now fell into a slump.

I've taken it several times in the past.  Didn't notice any weight gain or significant side effects.

It's a steroid, so that's understandable. However, its also an immunosuppressant, so I do not understand the logic of giving that to someone with the cold or flu, but IANAD.

It's basically brings down inflammation buy suppressing your body's natural immune response. In the case of an upper respiratory infection with inflammation in the lungs, it'll help open that and help you breathe. You will more than likely get an antibiotic with it.

Bullshit!  It weakens tendons and soft tissue causing injuries. Don't take this crap drug. Cons outweigh the pros.

If you are an active person avoid it. Just like cortisone shots.

Been on it a couple times

saw no benefits but was nearly bi-polar when on it

appetite stayed the same but have seen people become eating machines on it

short term wonder drug, long term nightmare. small doses short term usually make you feel ok but high dose for a couple weeks can be hard on the body.

can cause you to eat and eat and retain fluid, get moon face or round looking face, weak bones and organ issues long term.

I was on high doses of prednisone and periods of weaning for just over a year. Gained a lot of weight. Went months where I never slept continuously for longer than an hour and couldn't get back to sleep easily no matter how tired I was. It was horrible stuff but it kept me from literally shitting myself to death. I don't want to take it again but it did shut down a fairly bad case of a nasty disease almost overnight when I used it.

Good drug for what it does. Side effects were horrible.
5/10/2015 12:40:56 AM EDT
[#31]
Took me months to get off of it let alone recover from the side effects but I was on it over a year and it damn near ended up killing me. My legs and muscles wasted on it to the point they shook when climbing a ladder. I lost weight on it. 185 to 150 in a few months. Short term it can be a real help but 60mg/day long term no thank you. Never again.
5/10/2015 12:49:10 AM EDT
[#32]
nasty shit, but when I need it I need it, it is a great anti-inflammatory.

those short term 1-week prednisone packs are nothing, they usually only go up to 5-7mg, take 20-40 mg a day and get back to me.

Fucks with your sleep, after a few days I can only taste pure sugar or salt, I am always hungry. Lots of water weight gain, like drink a gallon of water and pee once or twice a day.

A guy at work takes it for Crohn's  disease, he literally puffs up like a balloon within 3 days, he gains 15-20 pounds.

Fucks with tendons, you bruise easily, sunburn easily, muscles mass and strength go away, long term use you will get diabetes.

I'd have to agree with the bold part.....if you can, try not to get on it...

I was on max dosage of 60mg for a couple of months....made me want to eat bigtime.

caused major insomnia ....

Take enough of it long enough you can lose your ability to taste food. I did a mass dosage for 5 days last year (1000mg/day) and I lost my ability to taste a cigar for 6 months.

This drug causes you to retain water, gain weight, insomnia, and holy shit can it make you snap and be on a hair trigger. Pretty nasty and severe side effects (more than listed) but also very effective. If the dosage is high and or longer than a couple weeks, don't suddenly stop taking it. This is a drug that must be weaned off. As far as how long the side effects can take to wear off, well that all depends on the person, the dose, and length on it. It also suppresses the immune system.

I was on it after getting shot in the eye with a paintball.  My dad and brother had been on it prior for sarcoidosis and chrones disease, so I knew what to expect.

Still turned me into a roid raging mofo - to this day I regret tearing into my little brother like I did for something really minor.

Approach with caution!

Was on that shit from last December till about 2 weeks ago. It made me miserable and even though I tapered off, once I stopped taking it I still got sick as hell. Haven't been able to work out in weeks, my thyroid has taken a shit, and I'm still a shell of the person I was beforehand.

It was a necessary evil in my case, but damn, sometimes the cure is worse than the cure. Try taking rotating doses of three different antibiotics along with cortico steroids for months on end, I dream of not being levitated off the toilet seat when it's time to poop.

It is a nasty drug. It helps if your sick. It makes you gain weight, I call it Prednisone Face. And it is rough on bones. I was on 60 yes sixty milligrams a day for 2 months and took a 50-40-30-20-10-5 six month taper. So yeah, Fuck that noise.

Tried a few pill packs for RA flare ups and it did nothing as they came and went faster than the week it took to work through the pill pack.

I noticed none of the positive side effects many claim.

I've not heard that.  I'm already type-1 diabetic.  Took some of this stuff for my RA.  Blew my blood sugar into orbit and was extremely difficult to get back under control.

We have a guy at work who was on it for a long time, then quit cold turkey.  He went batshit.  It was like he was a drunken tweaker.  No mental/vocal filter, unable to focus, personality shift from tightwad to over spender.  He's still in the hospital.
Fuck that drug.

I am a type 2 diabetic who was diagnosed with Pneumonia last year. They gave me a 10 day course of Prednisone. I am in control of my blood sugar, but after tiniest meals I would pop a blood sugar score of greater than 400. Eight days into treatment I went to a clothing store before leaving for a Colorado vacation. I lost my shit that day badly. I was in the dressing room trying on clothes when the snakes in my head started whispering.

I was hearing voices in my head telling me that I was being hunted and needed to escape. If I had my CCW on me I would have booked for the front door, believe me if I had of been carrying anyone man, woman or child got in my way leaving I would have shot. I was lucky I left my CCW in my car as I was expecting to be trying on new clothes and that would have been an extra inconvenience. So not being armed I sank into a corner and cried like a baby, complete meltdown.  Must have been a higher power that made me leave my gun in the car. I have never experienced type of Psychosis before in my life, I was scared shitless. I was two days away from finishing my prescription and flushed them in the toilet. I was never so scared and feeling like I was going crazy. YMMV.
