Great day to shoot.  70* and sunny.
And the range is empty, except for some skeet shooters!
I set my targets and enjoying the nice day.
Soon there are 5 people here shooting.  No problems.

Guy and his girl walk up.  Set their targets.  Shoot a bit.
Target break is called for people to post new targets or mark theirs.  Range is called cold.
Guy then starts instructing his girl how to line up the sights and squeeze the trigger.
I told her to lower the gun, and step away from the shooting bench.  The guy tells me it's ok, the gun isn't loaded...
I tell him it's not ok.  There are people down range.  The range is cold.  Safety comes first.
No handling guns until everyone is clear and the range is declared hot.
Simple rules to keep everyone on the same page.

I'm told it's a public range, and to buzz off.  Mind my own business.
The gun is unloaded and he is a safe person.  Deal with it.
I wished him a nice day, and packed up my stuff.

I need to find a private range or win the Lottery and buy 100 acres.

I would hope you complained to the management.Of course, headbutting the chick would have been something interesting to do, too.

No range safety at that public range? Was he balls deep in a squirrel or something?

The range near me is open to the public, but there's no RO there on weekdays because there's hardly anyone there.

But stuff like this is why I prefer to go up into the hills and shoot on BLM land anyway. No one for miles around.

PA Game Commission shooting range.  Located on State owned land, remote and unmonitored.
No range safety officer.
I saw an accidental/negligent discharge a few weeks ago at the same range.  Guy was trying to be the safety officer, finding fault with just about everyone, and he shot the shooting bunch with a 'it's not loaded' gun.  We helped him pack his stuff.

I'm done shooting there. And it's only 20 minutes away.

That place doesn't sound like a range, more like a news story in progress.

No RSO?

That guy was an idiot. I had my (gun-savvy and safe) friend nearly blow a hole through my bedroom wall with an "unloaded" AR. Never assume, and certainly never piont your gun towards people you don't want to kill.

This. First day I went to a public range this year and some dude was absolutely losing his mind on a guy who was finger fucking his gun while people were down range. I almost turned around to go home, but the dickhead packed his shit up a couple minutes afterwards and left.

Last year's local public range incident winner:  (I wasn't there at the time but the story was confirmed by a couple of individuals that were there)

Small range...all the benchs were full.  Range is called "Cold",  fella sends his 10yo son down to the 50yd target line to set up a new target.
He's half-way there when next you hear "Boom".
Fella at the bench next to Father/Son lets one fly down to the 25yd target line.  (keep in mind , the 100,50,25 yd benches are only 8ft apart with no barrier inbetween.

Dad stands up, says nothing.....walks over to the shooter and delivers a haymaker to the side of his head, sending him off the bench and onto the gravel.... then pulls his carry piece and with a varied array of explicatives about the shooters family lineage, tells him if he makes a move, he will most assuredly shoot him.  He then orders the shooter to grab his gear and depart the range.
The shooter complied.

Was it SGL 230.  Been to that range.  Got harassed by the game commision for having more than 3 rounds in the mag of my AR.  Apparently they changed that rule the year before and I didn't realize it.  3 round limit on any gun in any magazine.  Last time I ever went to a SGL to shoot.  They stated the rule was to help with longer wait times like before hunting season, but really it was more about the game commision not being a fan of all the black rifles showing up on their ranges.  lol, their ranges... I mean our taxpayer funded ranges.  Fuck the PA Game commision.  SOOO glad I moved the fuck out of PA.

SGL 300 Archbald Mountain is the range.
It's a shame too, as it goes to 200 yards and you can shoot clay pigeons.

While I probably would not have sent my son out instead of me, that father has admirable self control in his handling of the incident.

You did good.  I had a similar situation several years ago.  I was downrange, as was the guy who brought two hotties who obviously knew nothing about firearms.  He was at the 100 yard berm and I was at the shorter one.  I looked back and saw one of the young girls aiming a revolver at me.  At me.  I screamed at the top of my lungs to "PUT THE GUN DOWN--NOW!!!!!!!!"  Of course, I was an asshole because "it wasn't loaded."  They ended up leaving, otherwise we would have.

Got harassed for the same thing at the one behind Hawk Mountain near Cabela's.  It was just implemented and not even posted.  5 rounds in a 22 and dude went ape.  I believe that was 6-7 years ago.

I would think that's a very stupid thing to do, might get shot. I think the OP did the right thing. Getting into a heated argument at a gun range is very unwise IMHO.

Actually, pointing a firearm at a person, whether or not it is loaded, carries criminal charges in many states. It's a nice fact to bring up in these situations. And of course, the old "most accidental shootings happen with unloaded guns".
