I have been helping a friend choose his first handgun. We have gone to a few gun stores, held the guns, learned about the guns and shot most of them. He has it narrowed down to a Ruger SR40c, FNX, or an XDM. My preference is the FN or the Springfield. He is leaning towards the Ruger because of price and he likes the way it feels.

I have no experience with Ruger handguns. If this is what he chooses, is there anything that he needs to know about Ruger compared to FN or Springfield? My gut instinct is that "you get what you pay for" and the Ruger would be the worst option.

Uses are occasional carry while walking the woods and home defense.

Tell me what I need to know.

IMHO, if he likes the Ruger he should get it.

I have fired one (don't own one) and thought it was a decent gun.

ETA:  It was a bit small in the grip area for me though.

I have an SR9c and it's been really great. I know three people who bought one after shooting mine. It's been flawless.

Cheap enough and good ergos. Not my favorite, but it is a joy to shoot.

Have you friend get the gun that feels best to him.

Or provide a nice lineup and have him choose between a 1911, Browning Hi Power, Glock, or SIG P series. If none of those feel right to him he is beyond help.

As a guy who owns and shoots many SIGs and HK's, that Ruger has a surprisingly nice trigger. It a good gun for a great price. The first time I shot my brothers SR9, I shot dead center X at 15 yrds. I was impressed with the gun. Not a .40 fan though.

Go to a gun range and try as many as you can. My heart says FNX, my gut says XDM, but your hand my say Glock, you won't know until you try.

I would have to agree that the Ruger SR has a surprisingly nice trigger.  My old man loves his and I shoot it well when we are out at the range.  He has had zero issues with it so far.  Whatever he feels most comfortable with....have him buy.

Thank you for the replies. He has shot them all and is torn between them. He has a tendency to buy on price but I told him the same thing you are saying, if it feels good than buy it. Personally I own a XDM and I love it but that FNX was fantastic.

My nightstand gun is an FNP40. It's a great shooter, but the trigger is unimpressive. My vote is for the slavsquat XDM.

ETA: what XDM are you looking at (compact, 3.8, 4.5, or 5.25). Also, what about the XD Mod.2? Grip Zone!

The Ruger pistol is a good pistol. I dislike the extra safeties and the design on the pistol.

Own an sr9, they're reliable, accurate, hold lots of bullets, have pretty good glock like feeling triggers, decent sights and they're cheap. I'd say it's one of the best bang for buck auto pistols out right now. I don't shoot mine much anymore but the thing has never failed me as far as I can recall. I recommended one to my mom when she couldn't shoot a glock for shit, I can recommend without hesitation. There's alot of others I'd pick first but I wouldn't feel undergunned with a ruger sr## by a long shot.

I have an XDm 9mm and it's the best gun I have ever fired.

My son just bought a Walther PPQ M2....I gotta say...I'm impressed with the pistol, It handles nicely and it quite accurate. The price was decent as well.

Those choices are gross, but if those are the only options, go with the XDM.

My buddy has a SR9 and loves it, even more than my tricked-out Beretta M9A1. I've shot it and, while it didn't blow me away or anything, it felt good in the hand and shot well. It's a great gun for the price.

Personally I would go with the XDM but he needs to go with what feels best to him and he is most comfortable with.

Sig SP2022 for a budget pick.

Walther PPQ for something moderately priced.

Personally, I also would prefer the XDm.  But you have to remember, it's HIS purchase, and he should get what HE likes.  If he likes the Ruger, it's a basic solid gun at a good price point.  If it makes him happy to save the money, and he is going to use it "occasionally" as you posted, then let him buy what HE wants.

XD would be a great choice although IMO they are pricing themselves out of the market.

All great choices but buy the Ruger SR and use the difference in price to get extra mags and a holster and he will be extremely happy

I completely agree with this. I just didn't know if there was something about the Ruger that he would end up regretting.

Nothing to regret. Also, the magazine safety takes 30 seconds to remove should he desire. Once removed the gun can be dry fired safely without a magazine. Galloway's carries upgrade parts. Either bass pro or cabelas was running a sale on two SR mags for like half price. Carry with the 10 rounder back up with the 17s. I own it in 9mm, and recommend it in such. It has a very strong recoil spring, strongest I've felt. I can't imagine the .40 is any better.
