I haven't stayed in Gulf Shores in years. Looking to go in early August for a 5 day or so vacation. Which area is best to stay in? Orange beach or Gulf shores?
Any recommendations on places to rent? I would prefer to be on the beach, and not in a high rise building. I looked on a few rental sites but without knowing a little about the area there are so many options. Gulf shores central, east ,west Orange beach etc. |

We go to Orange Beach regularly. We usually rent through Sugar Sands realty, they are great people and give great service. We always stay in a building called Tradewinds. It's not a huge complex and it's right on the beach. Doc's Seafood is the place you seek for great seafood; the original one on Canal Rd, not the one in Gulf Shores. |
| We rented in a beach house on Orange Beach last year. $400 for 7 nights. Loved every minute. Orange is nice because it's a little further out away from the crowds. It's also dog friendly if that's your thing. It was awesome being able to walk out of the back door and cast into the surf without seeing another soul on the beach for a mile. |

| Both are good imo. Orange Beach has cool hotels with nice pools and slides. The other end has great beach houses that are more personal. I like staying at the beach houses across the street from the beach. That way you can have a pool and beach without all the tourist riff raff. |
| My aunt owns a unit in Phoenix IV Orange Beach, we stayed there last year about this time. Gulf Shores is too touristy, so be warned. We went to The Shrimp Basket, O'Choppers Irish Pub, Live Bait, and Flora Bama while we were there (no kids yet) and went out to Ft. Morgan and Spanish Fort on day trips (I had ancestors garrisoned there '62-65). We spent a day in Foley (wife wanted to shop), and on the way back we stopped at Mobile Bay and crawled all over the USS Alabama and Drum. There is plenty to do around there. |

Go to the Alabama Hometown section. Plenty of threads covering all of this. Do this I have a thread there before this year's vacation . We stayed Romar beach orange beach area for spring break and it was nice. We had a pool , nice view and away from crowds . We plan to go in the off season next year. |

Go to Destin instead. Fewer punks and drunken teenagers. Not in my experience. Destin is chock full of drunken assbag soldiers that come down from Fort Benning for cheap through the MWR. They spend their savings on booze and hookers. Trying to relax by the pool or on the beach around them is very difficult. |

| Some close family used to own a condo in Phoenix VIII in Orange Beach. Really nice place. It was right on the beach but far enough out from Gulf Shores to be quiet. Head over to Pensacola to the Naval Aviation Museum one morning and stop by the Crab Trap on the way back. |
