8 year old echo 2stroke trimmer started running poorly last year, wouldn't make max rpm unless the choke was on.  It quit running the other day.  New carb and spark plug, new fuel lines and filters, cleaned spark arrester (it wasn't stopped up).  It will run with starter fluid but as soon as that is gone it dies.  I can get it to idle on mix with almost full choke but it dies off idle.  I am at a loss
Ideas?

Bad valve maybe?

I had the same problem with both my Echo chainsaw and weedeater.

Until I got a can of pre-mixed 50:1 fuel.  The ethanol gas these days sucks.

Also, they lose power and don't want to run if the exhaust port ( under the muffler ) gets loaded with carbon.

Did you put the carb gasket on correctly? There is a pulse hole that operates the diaphragm pump in the carb. If that pulse hole is plugged / blocked by the gasket it wont pump fuel.

Seafoam and can of 50:1 should cure your woes.

Does it have good compression? You should actually check it with a small engine compression gauge before you put more money and time into it. You could have developed an airleak at the crankseals causing it to lean out and score the top end. Running only on partial/full choke is symptomatic of that.

Check it with a compression guage. If you dont check aat least 110psi, the top end is toast.

If you dont have a compression gauge pull the muffler of and look at the skirt of the piston. If you see any vertical scoring you have likely lost ccompression

New carb you said.  This is a throw-away plastic carb so you replaced with a new one?  Does that include the diaphragm pump?

Carbon in the exhaust ports.  Clean CAREFULLY.

Exhaust port was clean, carb gasket was turned around but still has a problem  compression 105psi
pulled top end apart, piston had very minor scoring a bad build up of crud top and in top of cylinder.  Ring was seized on one side.  40 bucks on amazon for a whole piston kit isnt too bad.

thanks for the replies  I was hoping for something simple....at least I love tinkering with things

Check muffler for a clogged spark arrestor screen.

Replace if clogged.

Throw away, buy a stihl.
