Is it bad form for a non service member to Salute?
I watched the video from Delta airlines and wondered if a fallen soldiers motorcade came by, would be bad form to salute them as the casket passed? |

I've saluted a number of my friends as their remains passed by. I've been retired for several years but will still render proper military courtesy to the fallen. Most retired guys will still automatically salute in these situations - it's ingrained.
Hat off and hand over your heart is perfectly acceptable and is the preferred salutation for 'civilians'. If you do wish to render a salute, please do it properly. |

I agree with the hand over heart. Too many people screw up a salute. Leave the salutes to the military and children. (I think it's awesome to see a little kid salute) I was driving the shuttle bus on Mare Island back in the day as part of my duty day. School had let out, and one of the elementary school kids acting as a road guard popped tall and gave me a perfect salute once the other kids had cleared the crosswalk. He held it until I returned it. I thought it was pretty cool. Someone had taken the time to show him how to do it properly, and he had learned and done it to perfection. When I got back to the quarterdeck, I was telling the duty chief about the kid saluting me. He asked, if I returned it. I told him if I didn't, that kid would still be standing there holding the salute waiting for me to return it. |

Total curiosity question: is a salute only proper with empty hands and a hat (cover) on? Saluting hand has to be empty, which is why most service members carry things in their left. Thatbeing said, if I pass someone that should render a salute, and they obviously have their hands full (like a diaper bag and their infant), a lot of times I'll salute and say something like "forget about it." |
