I bought a 7.75 HP Snapper lawnmower 1.5 years ago and it has been great up until the last couple mowing's.  It started making a loud grinding noise louder then the engine itself. It sounds like the grinding sound when you pull the start cord while the engine is running but it does this all the time. It has a 3 year warranty and Snapper told me to bring it a local power shop for repair. Long story short they replaced the ENTIRE engine stating is was defective. When I got it home it was still making this grinding sound. I took it back and the shop mechanic is now saying "oh that is normal and nothing to worry about". I insist it is not normal. He say he can take another look. He calls me back saying it is all fixed up and was just a loose bolt on the crank start mechanism. I get home and the mower is still making this loud grinding noise.

I'm still stuck with the same problem I took it in for and supposedly the entire engine was replaced. This is going on 6 weeks back and forth and 3 trips to the shop. Should I call Snapper and tell them about what is going on and that the shop probably has ripped them off or should I take my mower back and raise hell with the repair shop that Snapper sent me to? I'm so fucking mad right now!!!

Is the starter rope up on the push bar?

It sounds like the rope is out too far. While it's running try pulling SLOWLY on the rope to see if it gets better or worse. Other than that I got nuttin.

Yes it is on the push bar. It will stop the grinding sound if I jiggle the rope it stops the grinding but it comes back with in 10-30 seconds. Mechanic says it's normal but I have experience on 20 different lawnmowers over the years and none of them do this. This mower never did this when it was new and only started recently. There's something wrong with it.
