actually a lot of problems. as many of you know, last november my father was killed in a car accident. so now i am living alone with my mother. she can't drive on her own, because she is diabetic and so is blind in one eye and her vision is poor in the other. she is also suffering from kidney failure, and will be going on dialisys in a few short weeks. heres my problem, i am the only one who can help my mother to thie extent i can, and i just recived deployment orders. how in hades am i going to take care of her when i am (30,000?) miles away? she obviousely has many needs and my sister , with a family of her own couldn't possably tend all of them. whats a guy to do? |

Chapter 6 hardship discharge. If you have no other siblings, you will be discharged. But you can't come back. Ordinarily this would piss me off. As a commander, family always came first. If there was anyone else but the soldier to do it, that is what happened. But if it had to be the soldier, so be it. Can't force a man to choose country over family. |

Hi Mrs. Tiredtoolman speaking here, Here is some options because you have to consider her transportation needs for dialysis. Assisted living community, not quite a nursing care facility, more like aprtment living with a nurse present, and meals prepared, and monitoring of her medication and diabeties. Also, it depends on how independent she is at home, there is home health care as well. This might be an option, try contacting the hospital near you for a social worker who may be able to help to locate resources for your mother's care while you are gone. And now you keep your head low, and THANK YOU for defending this fine country we live in!!! Mrs. Tiredtoolman |

Check with some of the local Diabetes support groups, the local hospitals should have a list. Also the State Department of Human Services, or whatever it's called in New York will have some programs to help. My wife works for Texas DHS, and there are quite a number of programs set up to help. I'll show her this thread when she gets home, perhaps she will have other ideas... fullclip |

thanks guys. i have been considering the hardship, but the problem there is that i have a sister in the area. but she has a full time job, (with the occasional dubble shift because she cant leave the office unatended) two kids with helth problems and a dead beat husband who has stated unequivocally (sp.) that he will not allow my mother to live with them. (there are some frictions between them). but i do have a sibling. thats why my CO wouldn't give me the discharge. and now my only hope for a discharge is when i get to the mobe station (ft. drum) and present my case to the batt.CO. but i still have to leave at least for a week or so. i will look into the assisted liveing idea, but i havn't much time, and we have no money to pay for these services. we have also purchased a house, because it is more accomodateing to her dificulties, but it need lots of work before we can move in. i was hopeing that any deployment would wait till about early apr.. one more thing anyone in NY know about how much it would cost to board a large, 10 month old, very playfull dog? mother simply can't handle her alone. thanks again |
