Had a hell of a headache all day and think TMJ might be the cause.

When I had upper jaw surgery about 14 years ago the surgeon said my left jaw joint was almost worn out, so am wondering if that is probably it.

Never really had a problem with it until a dentist appointment this last Thursday. I wanted to take that F-ing bite block and throw it across the room.

Then botox is the solution you seek.

Seriously though, for patients with severe headache related to tmd I use botox in combination with an NTI or occlusal orthotic.

So getting injected with botulism does the trick?  What about if the joint is worn out?

yep, I boxed as a kid and my jaw will pop out if I open too wide(insert joke here) or just randomly sometimes. There are some stretches and whatnot to do for it but I never really bothered, but maybe I will now.

If serious, I thank you for the advice... I will ask my dentist on my follow up next week.

What does Botox actually do? I have been using an orthotic for 15 years.

It gently relaxes the masseter and temporalis.  You have a "worn out joint" for a number of different reasons, an injury, occlusal interference, nocturnal bruxism (which itself has a number of causes), or clenching during the day.  The joint itself is never given a rest when you sleep because you are bruxing.  The botox gives the joint the needed time to rest and heal while you sleep.  Combining that with the orthotic makes for a quick recovery.  Relaxing the muscles of mastication and your face/neck is now an FDA approved treatment for chronic tension headache and migraine as well.

Not many dentists are up to date on this.  Most will just take impressions and hand you a night guard to take home when it gets back from the lab.  It will make the problems worse, not better, unless is it meticulously adjusted to put your jaw in the right position as your teeth come together.
