Very cool! Syrup season is still going here. It seems most are using bags rather than buckets around here. How many gallons of sap to make a gallon of syrup? about 40:1 next year I'm going to get a refractometer which will tell me the sugar content of the sap and syrup... don't really need one but I like toys... some years you only need 30 gallons of sap... others more... the refractometer will tell us exactly... |
Hello, fellow syrup maker checking in... congrats cleb on reaching your goal. We are still going here in Northern Vermont but without another freeze we will likely be done this weekend. We have around 6300 taps and are up to 2289 gallons as of today when I left the sugarhouse to come to work. Things didn't look to good early on but picked up this last week and a half. I am actually ready for it to end now since these last two weeks have been busy and long between working 12 hour nights and trying to keep the syrup business going. As of 6:30 tomorrow morning I will have slept a total of 3 hours out of 48, I'm running on fumes .

I had a small barrel evaporator made that holds two steam pans and I tapped about 30 trees. I made about 3 gallons of syrup in total. I am looking at purchasing a Mason evaporator for next year. I have approximately 500 maple trees on my property and have access to about another 2000 next door. For now it's just a hobby but I would like to sell some in the future. |
