The smaller blower (Not the big one in the bottom, the one that starts up first) in my furnace is making a grinding noise when starting up like worn out bearings.  It looks easy to replace.  Should I wait for it to shit the bed completely or replace it now?   It looks like a few bolts and a wire connection, seems an easy fix, am I wrong?

Fix it now or it'll shit the bed on the coldest weekend when no one is open to source it.

You'll need to buy the entire assembly as MOST of them do not come separate. [BCP has some models that you can buy just the motor and wheel for]

Is there any downside to buying a replacement and having it on hand to replace after it dies?  Is it a fire hazard?

No fire hazard, the furnace just won't run if the inducer assy can't close the pressure switch. [heat side won't work]

If you know it is bad, replace it when it is not essential.
