Anyone have one? Looking to get a artisan model. We have been making homemade candy like peanut butter balls, coconut balls, etc and mixing by hand is a pain in the ass. Thoughts?

Wife has a plain white one. She's happy with it and has used it a lot.

They're powerful enough that they are to be respected and not put hands where they don't belong.

Owned one for 15 years now, Mrs BB uses it all the time. Solid kit.

We have one with a few attachments it works very well. The meat grinder has been great for light duty grinding.

Do it.  We nearly killed a Cuiseneart making pizza dough.  The KitchenAid doesn't miss a beat.
Of course you will then want all the accessories.  Meat grinder, pasta maker.

My mom has one and it's been great. My wife wanted one so they got her one for Christmas, but I can't give you a review on it because she hasn't even used it yet.

Bought a refurbished one a few years back .  Still works great. At least no complaints from my wife  or daughter.

We have the Pro 500. It's very well made.

One of the best purchases I ever made for the wife.  Grinder attachment turns venison into deer burgers with amazing speed, too.  Get one, you won't be disappointed.

Bigger isn't always better. I prefer the tilt design over the bowl lift design. We have both.

Find the older, Hobart made ones with the bowl lift.  The new ones are junk.

The bowl lift model fits tight against the backsplash, and clears the overhead cabinets, allowing more area for prep (you can never have enough room in a kitchen).  Grandmas mixer was the best for a reason

I use the 6qt lift bowl model for dough/cookies/bismark pancakes and the shreadder attachment for hard cheese.

just buy the 600 series and never look back

Chef.

My wife has both the tilt and lift mixer. The tilt model  is over 30 years old and still works great.
3/27/2015 9:35:24 AM EDT
[#17]
Old ones are great.

New ones are OK but be aware that the gear head is packed with grease and over time that grease works its way down and will drip in your mixing bowl at the worst possible time.

There is a shallow chrome ring around the base of the head that collects the grease until it fills up.

[#18]
Not sure what one we have.  It says max 350 watts.

It's a tilt head.  On the bottom a  stick on label says RRK150, I think.

So far no problems.

As others have said:  Pro 600 all the way.

Good luck!

We had an artisan.

Now we have a professional.

Go professional.

bowl lift

the tilting models have plastic cogs in the gear train, least they did a few years ago, maybe all of hem are all metal now.

The bigger hte better.  Over capacity = longevity.

I guess I can't speak to the newer tilting ones, but my mom has one still running like a champ from the 70s. Ours is much newer, but the lifting, not tilting ones, and they just simply aren't as convenient. I really wish we had the tilting model, but not enough to try and sell ours to buy a new one.
3/27/2015 9:51:53 AM EDT
[#25]
You will only have to buy one in your life. Like gun safes get one a little bigger than you think you need. Granny's is from the late 1960s and still running strong has the bowl raises and lowers.

Get one with the highest watts and one that will hold the biggest bowl. If you plan to use it as a grain mill you'll thank yourself. There are attachments for all kinds of stuff; pasta, grain mill, sausage making, meat grinding to name a few. Also it's just a great mixer.

I love mine.

overpriced.  Do look into the gears.  My wife wanted to start making bread and some of them can not kneed because of cheep plastic gears stripping.  Likewise the design is too tall for some kitchen counters and most cabinets.

I think Bostch has a mixer with good reviews,  ours is a electrolux

fwiw the kitchen aid still gets used - just not for tough jobs.

Wifes the kitchen guru. Remember her saying you have to watch out on the wattage. You want the most you can get. Some of the "Special Deal " models you see advertised or that are offered at like Walmart and department stores are the low powered models.

This!  Don't get the tilt up Artisan model.

You can find them for around $200 on Ebay.  Here's one.

I got my mother one back in the early 90's as a xmas gift and she used it prob 6 days a week until 2010 or so ( she loves cooking and baking and did cadering for the longest time. mostely desserts). around 2010 she stopped using it as much but it still got used prob 3 times a week or so. that was a 4.5 qt .. in 2012 i got her a new 5qt model because her old one had been used hard for years. She still loves it. I have owned a 5qt since 2004 or so and its the best thing to have in the kitchen.

Point: They work great and last forever

Another vote for the Pro 600.  America's Test Kitchen recommended.  Very powerful and great for bread and pizza dough.
We've had it's about 5 years. Before that it was mom's old MixMaster stand mixer.

Best kitchen appliance we've ever bought.  Ours is now about 12 years old and still runs like the day we bought it. We whip out deep dish pizza dough in minutes.  Nothing else will ever be good enough once you use a Kitchenaid stand mixer.

Built like a Kirby vacuum and just as durable.  Got my wife a refurbished one from Overstock for a good price.

Ex-gf loved baking. When she got one, I went from 168 to 203 in a few months. She went from 120 to 163 in the same time frame. That shit is dangerous!

My mother got my wife one for her bridal shower.

My wife insisted on using a hand mixer for years after that, and it sat in its box unused.

Then our hand mixer broke and she was forced to use the Kitchenaid.  Now she loves the damn thing and doesn't know how she ever lived without it.

I run about 3 deer a year through the grinder attachment.  Sausage stuffer attachment is nice too.
