Why is Arfcom so scared of bears?  They come up in every shotgun, AK, FAL and 10mm thread.

According to Taylor Y. Cardall and Peter Rosen, in their article "Grizzly Bear Attack" published in the The Journal of Emergency Medicine, there were 162 bear-inflicted injuries reported in the United States between 1900 and 1985. This constitutes approximately two reported bear-inflicted injuries per year.[1] Likewise, Stephen Herrero, a Canadian biologist, reports that during the 1990s bears killed around three people a year in the U.S. and Canada, as compared to the 15 people killed every year by dogs.

GD is now asking bears or no bears?

I say no bears.

I usually like bears.  I want a grizzly/polar bear so I can make slippers out of them with the claws still attached, and a robe out of its hide.

Semi-serious question:

Has there been a recorded instance of someone being killed or seriously injured by a bear AFTER hitting said bear with either a 5.56 or 9mm?

At the rate the cops are shooting dogs, those numbers should even out eventually

I have no reason to be scared of them. I have never seen one and I have been on this planet 50 years.  We apparently don't hang out in the same neck of the woods.

Bears are a pain to have to deal with.
I have lived in the woods here for 19 years and they come visit every year and fuck up something of mine.
Last year it was my Big Green Egg.
Knocked it over and ate part of the firebox.
In 2011 moma bear is trying to get into the gangbox where the dogfood is and her 4 cubs are sitting on the hood of my 4 day old jeep wrangler.
A round fired into the ground usually scares them off for an hour or 2 but they come back till you get rid of what they are after.

It allows an excuse to have an excessively large/powerful firearm. Many people in the gun culture obsess with "bigger = cooler = better," the same reason you see Chuck Bronson go from imminently more practical .38 revolvers to .475 Wildey Magnums. Big guns are cool, but don't work that well for self defense, so an excuse is needed to justify why some Arfcommers want to carry 10mms, .45 Colts and have a Saiga loaded with slugs next to the bed.

Combine that with Arfcom's myth that bears are actively hunting, killing and sacrificing humans to Satan multiple times every day. Add a dash in of 'Shit, I'm losing the AR vs 12 gauge debate, again, I better figure out something else to try to talk about," and you get the bear meme.

Because I need to reason my purchases with a logical thought... like me owning a .45-70 Government Marlin 1895 Guide Gun when I lived in Miami. It was for the possibility of escaped zoo animals after a hurricane.
