My wife had a CT scan yesterday and her gastro Dr. says the appendix looks a little inflamed.  They called earlier and said she has an appointment for next Thursday with a surgeon but they told her to go to the ER if the pain gets worse. Tell me about your experience with appendicitis.  Thanks.

I had pains for a few days, went to the ER and they yanked it out that night.

The funny part is that I woke up in the middle of surgery, freaked everyone and myself out when I tried to yank the tube out of my throat. I can remember the look on the Dr's eyes and his commands to "Put him out! Put him out!"

Overall it isn't bad, few days in the hospital until you can walk again.

Only one I ever knew was a buddy in middle school. His burst at it almost killed him. He went from being chubby to bone skinny, lost 1/3 of his weight.

Don't let that sucker burst.

Good luck with the surgery, hope it goes smooth.

Always better to have it out electively, than emergently.

Always.

Edit to add: most elective appy's are done laparoscopically nowadays, with a minimal recovery time.

Here is a DIY if you are interested, it has a 3-4 "minimal" difficulty level

Mine gave me problems when I was 29.  Felt a sharp pain one Friday morning and thought it was a hernia.  Pain increased during the day.  Wife convinced me to go to ER ~8pm.  I was in surgery by 11pm.   Back at work Monday morning with no real problems other than some tenderness for a few days.

Gall bladder 5yrs later was basically the same, but had to wait 2 days for the surgery.

Mine burst at 10 years old while at school.  Went from feeling fine to doubled over in pain.  Went home that afternoon still thinking it was a stomach ache.  Stayed home for 4-5 days before finally getting in to the family doctor.

After a 10 minute exam, he told my parents, "I'm calling the hospital now, they'll be waiting for you at the emergency entrance.  Do not stop for anything along the way."

We pulled up, my car door flew open and I was on a gurney heading down the hallway prepping for surgery.  Later when I woke up doctor said it was one of the worst he had seen.  Me, being a ten year old boy, asked if I got to keep it in a jar and take it home?  He said there was nothing left to keep, complete rupture.

Spent a week in the hospital and another week at home recovering.

Our high school quarterback had his ruptured during homecoming game and played the game all the way through. We think it ruptured somewhere in the 2nd quarter based on him coming out for a few plays with really bad pain in his side. After the game he went to hospital because it was hurting worse and his parents thought something was really wrong and they were right.

Started feeling bad at 2pm.

In ER by 10pm.

Surgery at 6am.

Home by 4pm.

Had to take it easy for a couple weeks but my body just doesn't like surgery, I've come to see. My vasectomy put me on the couch for a couple weeks, too.

40K dollars for less than 20 hours in the hospital. Deductible was 5k but still....

On January 29 I had some discomfort when I finished work. Went home and had a nap. Woke up in excruciating pain. Went to the ER and told them I had pain in my right side side and it was pretty bad. They told me to have a seat in the waiting room. 2 hours later and I was still waiting so I left. Fucking Canadian healthcare. The next morning I went to a different hospital and they did a CT scan and sent me in for surgery. Surgeon said it hadn't ruptured but it was going to any minute.

I feel fine now. Had sore ab muscles for a week and some phantom pains but they're gone now. The weirdest part was how it just came out of nowhere. Went from fine to doubled over in pain in an hour or two.

Just had mine out day after thanksgiving.

Very slight dull pain in rlq. Oh thing that suggested appendicitis was location. Ct scan showed mild acute appendicitis. Went in just before noon. Was discharged by 1800 that night. I'm an RN there and so is my wife so we had a little more leeway in getting discharged early.

Recover was easy. Was done lapriscopic and I was up and walking before leaving. And peeing. Very important make sure she is able to pee before going home.

After that. Take it easy and walk around and increase activity. I was cleared for full duty after two weeks.

If you mean does it feel like someone rubbed sterno on the inside of your abdominal wall in that region and then lit it, then yes, that is what a ruptured appendix feels like.

Ruptured mine during my bachelor party. I had been sick off and on for about a week. Thought I was just really constipated. 4 days later woke up with a 104 fever with a cold sweat and my right sight burning on the inside. Went to the ER and it was removed about an hour later. 4 day hospital stay afterwards.

I'd say the worst part was the tube they had stuck through my side for the 4 days I was in. Every few hours they would come in and change the bottle. They would squeeze the new one before hooking it to the tube to create a vacuum to suck out all the fluid. That and the catheter.... That really sucked.

Mine ruptured when I was around 20.  It wasn't a fun experience as I was in the hospital for 3 weeks.  I took my son to the hospital when he was around 11 or 12 for what we thought might be an appendicitis.  They took it out, but it was determined that it was normal.

That's the problem with appendicitis; there is no definitive test to determine whether it's good or bad, only circumstantial evidence.

I have an appendix stone and as a consequence my appendix gets mildly inflamed from time to time.

One time while traveling and working in Houston it cranked up pretty good.  This was when I found out I had the appendix stone.  Abdomen got very tender, hurt to sit down and stand up, had rebound pain when appendix was pressed.

Went to the doctor, got a CT scan, they said you have an inflamed appendix, we'll schedule surgery for tomorrow.  I said "tomorrow? must not be an emergency then, I wait until I get back to Dallas (I had my family with me in Houston wasn't going to pay for them to be in a hotel for a few more days while I recovered if it wasn't an emergency).

I get back to Dallas the next day and it's feeling a little better.  By Monday, it was feeling pretty good.  I went and saw another internal medicine guy and he basically said, we can  take it out right now if you want, but it's not medically necessary.  It will probably be necessary some day.

That was about a year and a half ago.  Since then I've had a couple of episodes, none nearly as bad as the first, that last a day or two where the area is sensitive.

If your wife is waiting until Thursday, then she's probably in more or less the same boat I was in.  After having lots of surgeries in my youth, I'm fairly conservative when it comes to surgeries that I don't have to have.

Dull pain in my lower right abdomen when I went to bed.  Next morning I had the same pain and it got progressively worse, with me starting to double over in order to walk.  About 10AM I went to the doctor and he referred me to the surgeon.  At noon I saw the surgeon and he had me admitted to the hospital.  I was wheeled into surgery at 4PM.

The end result was my appendix was ready to burst and the inflammation had spread to the adjacent lymph nodes, so they took out both.

I had mine out when I was 18 in the late 80s.

Onset was slow and I was doubled over in pain laid up on the couch before finally convincing my parents to take me to the hospital on the third night around 10 PM. On the drive to the ER my dad was going on and on about how I was either faking or it was nothing serious like constipation, that this was going to be a waste of money and that I was going to pay for it. We got there, they checked me out and ran some tests, after a while a doctor came in and said appendicitis and that I needed surgery pronto. I was prepped and on my way to the operating room by about 1 or 2 AM.

I was in the hospital for about three days as either my appendix burst before surgery or something happened during surgery that made me septic. I was on a ton of antibiotics and painkillers for a while and I could hardly eat much without puking for several days afterwards. When I was discharged from the hospital I could barely walk and it took a good week before I was mobile under my own power again, let alone do much else. After the stitches were removed I was pretty solid but it took months before the stiffness went away. Here I am almost 30 years later and I still have the scar.

And just last year one of my business partners had almost the exact same situation happen to him... really bad abdominal pains, laid up on couch for a day or two and he finally said "fuck this" and had his wife drive him to the hospital. Diagnosed with appendicitis and put into surgery that night. Unlike me he was not septic and also had the benefit of modern medical procedures, so he was out and on his feet in a few days.

Wait... she has a hot appendix and they made an appointment for NEXT WEEK?

What the hell kind of witch doctor are you seeing?

Acute appendicitis is a surgical emergency.  I would only consider putting off that "inflamed appendix" if it was an incidental/questionable finding on the scan, and your wife otherwise has no pain or complaints.

If she has symptoms, that needs to go.

I had a big bout with what I thought was food poisoning in Sept-Oct 2000. Doc gave me a sedative and I woke up feeling ok after spending the entire previous night puking.

A few months later had it again (early to mid December 2000) and went in to the doc again. They pushed in on my lower abdoment a little and asked if it hurt, I said yes, so they sent me to the ER. ER docs did a scan and said my appendix was about 2x the size it was supposed to be and they were surprised that I was even walking around. Set me up for the surgery that night and was really sore for a few weeks. It took 6 weeks of recovery before I was able to go back to light duty at my job.

I have a nice 4 or 5 inch scar on my lower right abdoment right above the belt line. I have heard that nowadays they make a small incision in your belly button and perform most of the op with a laser or something.

When I went down, it was easier to count the stuff that didn't cause blinding agony in the lower right abdomen.

When the doc in the emergency room poked that area, I essentially folded in half while simultaneously barfing on him.

Mine sucked.

I was about 13? or so.

I couldn't walk. Enormous lower right abdomen pain. Had emergency surgery, which ended not so good.

A few weeks after surgery my wound opened up. Never figured out why. The doctor supposedly used dissolvable stitches. Not sure if he fucked up and didn't use the right ones, or if I was allergic.

I walked around for months with about an inch of my insides hanging out. Doc said it had to heal from the inside out. Dude was a dick, he walked in and saw my insides coming out, and said hmm that's interesting and then walked the fuck out. I had to have it cauterized every few days at the hospital. I now have a knarly scar.

I went to bed with general abdominal pain, which was bad but not horrible. I woke up feeling like an angry little creature was trying to gnaw its way out of my guts (then localized to lower right). Straight to hospital for surgery within an hour or so. It was less than 24 hours from the first twinge of pain to the OR.

Depends on the severity.

I thought I pulled a muscle really bad and tried to ignore it for 2 days. Occasional barfing and feeling feverish. It got to the point I was puking up green stuff and writhing in pain on the floor. It was pretty terrible. Because it was burst for a couple days they had to do the big incision and clean it all out after removal. I was in the hospital for a week due to the infection. It was rough.

After surgery? Piece of cake as compared to that rotting bastard being inside me.

My aunt had it and went months with it. Her body built a cocoon like thing over it and she was fine for the most part. It was encased when they removed it.

Mild abdominal pain while in college. Started to get worse throughout the evening and into the next morning. GF talked me into going to the student medical center. One of the PAs poked me in the appropriate area with her thumb and I reeled back. Student medical center called an ambulance and I found myself in the OR within the hour. The Dr. told me after surgery I was a few hours from a rupture.

My pain, generally, wasn't that bad so don't expect extreme pain.

That being said if the wifey has pain when you press your thumb to the appendix area, you should both head to the ER.

Had one of my best friends just go through it after 3 days of increasing pain. They caught it before it burst but just barely. She was CT scanned and in the ER within 3 hours.

They used orthoscopy and she was out in a day. She was very sore the first week (compounded by her period) and ate very little the first couple of days due to nausea. After that she felt pretty good but is forbidden to lift weights, run, do krav maga, sit ups, etc for a month or risk tearing the internal stitches. Only low impact exercises.

Unlike my dad's appendix scar with the ortho there is virtually no scarring. The just go in right above the belly button and done

Not me, but family members. My sister went to the hospital ER in pain and they sent her home.  Pain thereafter stopped because it ruptured.  That's they key.  If the pain stops, it may have ruptured.  She did go back and ended up in surgery and in ICU for a week due to sepsis and low blood pressure brought on by the sepsis.   My dad's ruptured overnight before I was born, I think (late 1960s).  Upon waking one morning, my mom noticed my dad looked "grayish," his color wasn't right.  Took him to hospital and doctor said she saved his life by being observant.

My story.

After some bad pork I caugnt C Diff Colitis. (Nasty stuff). Spent four days with intense pain last year and literally shit and vomit every 20 minutes. Couldn't eat anything. Pain continued to get worse and by the 4th day there was some relief. The pain was dulled but I couldn't kept anything down and still shit nonstop. (Shit myself 3 times at this point).

Made it ten days. Realized I hadn't eaten anything since and lost over 20 lbs. Fiance finally convinced me to go to the doctor and turned out my appendix burst on day four (hence the relief). Scheduled me for surgery the next morning 12 hours away. Apparently it was really bad. My insides were covered in shit.

They made a 10 inch incision in my abdomen and pulled all my insides out and washed them off on a table. After the surgery the doctor told me he was really "worried" during surgery. The surgery itself had me in the hospital for 4-5 days but the c diff kept me in there another 6 days until infectious diseases cleared me to leave.

$60k for that experience. I was blessed enough to have the whole fee waived which I still feel like I didn't deserve. I struggled with that a bit.

Anyway here's an after surgery pic.
