So I have this server, and no clue what to do with it.  It was used with another company for data storage only.  What do i do with it now?  I don't even know what I can and can't do with a server like this.  Have a super sweet home media collection, use exchange for my own email accounts?  Its running windows Small Business Server 2008.  Tell me ARFCOM, what do I do with it.

Please note:  No GD, it will not become a porn server

Can i use it to have my own iCloud?

Use it to heat your house and run Plex on it.

Get a copy of freenas http://www.freenas.org/ and run it as a storage device.

Maybe enough to run VMware or Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization (RHEV), with enough memory and dual socket.  Good news is that parts are cheap.

The power savings alone would be worth it.

Bet you that can't double as a white noise machine and space heater, though!

I'll take it off your hands if you're worried about power consumption! Honestly, I'm interested!

I was hoping to figure out what to do with it.  I realize this is like saying I bought a Ford truck, and giving no there info, but I don't know even where to start

Posting the service tag (should be on a sticker on the chassis) should at least us some base info to work off of.

sell it and buy something else, I'm not kidding, its worth more for resale unless you are going to rack it and use it as a server (which is beyond your needs at home)

610s are power efficient and quiet, but if you are asking here, sell it

Good freebie

Post the service tag if you want real answered, but be aware we can find the original purchaser

I run a few of these at work. One is a share server with AD on it, one is a web server and one is an exchange email server.

I still have 2 other businesses that use it as a share server.  There are 2 separate drives on there and they are just data storage.  Outside of that though, I have no clue what to do with it.  I am getting to the point where I could take it home and use it for something if I wanted.

From Dell's page:

Two hot plug high efficient 502w PSU (Energy Smart) or
Two hot-plug 717W PSUs (High Output)

When it fires up, it will be noisy, suggest that if you have a basement or utility area to put it in, its not a desktop.

Running Vmware, etc will make it worthwhile if you want to spin up instances.

Yes, it will read "Service Tag: XXXXXXXXX"

Also, if you turn it on, it should display in the information display...Unless someone has changed it to say something else.
