I recently acquired an Aimpoint via trade on the EE.  I work on the road and did the trade while enroute to Dallas.  Well after I was done there I was told to join a crew that is heading into Canada.  Since I have no intention of

selling and such, would I still be screwed hard by the feds via ITAR for taking this into Canada with me, then back into the U.S. about a week later?  I really dont want to mail the damn thing but if it prevents a prison term...

yeah I'd mail it.

I think you can take it there, but you might not be able to bring it back. Either don't do it or don't get caught would be my advice.

That was my original thinking.  I think I probably better mail the damn thing.  I freakin HATE the USPS though.  Wouldnt trust em to deliver rubber dog shit from Hong Kong.

I am gonna say NO, DO NOT TAKE !!!
The Canadians seem to be even more strict on these issues than the US.

I would be calling Canadians customs, and US Customs or BIS, and get the rules down, before attempting.

You cant have a friend receive it ?
Maybe have the USPS hold the shipment, like a vacation hold, until you get back.

OP, could you rent a storage shed for a week?  Just a small one, that's inside a secure building?  Other than that, I don't know.

Canadian border security is serious business now.  I had a hard time getting IN for work reasons, but coming back was easy for me.  So it sounds like it might just depend, and it would be a toss up of you losing it or not.

Forgot about the thread....I mailed it back home before Canada.  Strangely when I talked to the Canadian border guard, he didnt seem to care.  Now the guard at re-entry in Portal, ND.... he was saying I would be violating ITAR.  Oh well, 650 dollars later in insurance through USPS (about 30 total to ship) it got to where it was needed.  Thanks guys.

I would say that that's incorrect.

The U.S. government ever since 9/11 has gone batshit crazy with ITAR related rules.

It's not about "safety", or keeping things away from terrorists - it's about $$$$ that the U.S. gets from retailers paying big money for export permits.

Good call on mailing it.

It was probably the best option.
