Insufficient Evidence for: Ringing in the ears (tinnitus). Some early research suggests that giving vinpocetine by mouth and intravenously (by IV) along with physiotherapy might reduce ringing in the ears. However, giving vinpocetine by IV appears to be less effective than the drug nicergoline in reducing ringing in the ears caused by intense sound.

It worked for me

I'm not too sure of the history of it.  I originally bought it just because of the brain/blood flow benefits, I didn't even know it would help with hearing/tinnitus at first.

Same here. Without a fan I don't sleep. My dad is from the old days (1930s), back then they didn't use hearing protection, if it was even available. He never thought to teach us about when we were growing up so now my hearing is shot to hell.

I fucking hate that shit.  Have to sleep with a fan at night, still hear it.  I can ignore it better now, but it still drives me crazy some days.

My dad had muffs for me, but he didn't wear them, so I didn't.

Some time back a scientist I knew on my shooting raqnge told me about The Hearing Pill, which was supposed to protect hearing and was used by the Navy. He said it is basically NAC. If you buy NAC it is cheaper then The Hearing Pill.

http://www.tinnitusformula.com/library/nac-for-tinnitus-and-your-health/

http://www.lef.org/Protocols/Eye-Ear/Tinnitus/Page-07

http://www.lef.org/Magazine/2012/5/Strategies-Protect-Preserve-Your-Hearing/Page-02

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2808688/

I know there are some claims NAC can help after hearling loss.

Link for The Hearing Pill:

I'll note that on The Hearing Pill page linked above, they also mention the stuff mentioned by the OP.

Vinpocetine can cause some side effects including stomach pain, nausea, sleep disturbances, headache, dizziness, nervousness, and flushing of the face.

No thanks.

With the exception of flushing, those side effects can happen with aspirin and most other drugs, both Rx and OTC...

As a student pharmacist, I have access to Natural Standard, which details herbals and their interactions with prescription and OTC medications. Some of the details of this herb include:

Background

  • Vinpocetine is best known for its neuroprotective effects. It been used to maintain and improve brain health and cognition. According to secondary sources, in the brain, vinpocetine has been shown to cause relaxation of smooth muscle, dilation of blood vessels, improved blood flow, increased production of ATP, improved utilization of oxygen, improved metabolism of glucose, and improved cerebral efficiency.

  • Vinpocetine has proven clinical benefit for patients with central nervous system disorders and psychosyndromes, such as dementia. Human studies have shown that it has potential usefulness in the treatment of encephalopathy, hearing impairment, memory, ophthalmologic disorders, renal impairment, stroke, and urinary incontinence. A lack of benefit was found in patients with Alzheimer's disease. Better-designed clinical trials are needed before strong recommendations may be made regarding taking vinpocetine for any health condition.

Scientific Evidence
Hearing Loss = Grade C (Studies have unclear or conflicting evidence. Studies can be Randomized Controlled Trials [RCTs] with inconclusive findings, sample sizes were small, or multiple RCTs reached different conclusions). Basically it may or may not work. As long as it didn't compromise a patients safety, I would be ok with my patient trying it, with careful monitoring of side effects

Safety

  • Food may increase vinpocetine absorption and lower the risk of stomach irritation.

  • Caution in patients with history of: abnormal heart rhythm, diabetes, impaired immune function, hypoglycemia, nervous disorders, stomach and GI issues, skin sensitivities, or when combined with the agents below.

  • Caution when used with: phosphodiesterase enzyme inhibitors (ie Viagra), vasodilators, antacids, calcium channel blockers, and blood pressure-lowering medications (ie ACE Inhibitors, ARBs, Diuretics).

  • Avoid if patient has: bleeding disorders or taking drugs that may increase the risk of bleeding.

  • Avoid use if 2 weeks before or after any dental procedures or surgeries

  • Avoid if pregnant or breastfeeding

  • Avoid if known allergy or sensitivity to vinpocetine.

I would be willing to try it, but I don't know what effects it will have, as my hearing loss is supposed to be nerve related. At least it will help protect me from dementia (maybe)

I think it's hushed down my tinnitus a bit after 3 days.  Taking max dose--three pills a day.  No improvement in hearing, but the noise, a 5k Hz whine, is...reduced.  No side effects.

I see improvement I think. Taking 10 to 30mgs a day.
I literally wear Headphones 23 hours a day playing something so I'm not aware when it improves
But there off as I type this and I'm not losing my mind so I'm hopeful.
Thanks again OP
