Right now I'm doing okay. Earning more than I've ever earned before. However, it's part time work at a couple different places. One job I absolutely love and I just need to be able to hold out another year working there part time and then I'll nail a full time position and pretty much be set for life, at least that's how I see it (health, vacation/sick/holidays, pension, etc).
But until that point I want to get out of one of the places I'm at. The owner is a jerk and, although I'm doing good work, it's never good enough and he's always threatening to cut my pay/hours/etc. It's just not how things normally work for me. Usually I get rave reviews/evals. Anyway, I've got an MS in clinical psych and counseling but instead of looking within my field I'm wondering if there are any decent jobs out there that I could do part time (maybe 2-2.5 days) during the week and get somewhere near $300 after taxes? Anything like that out there? Again it would only be for a year or so. Searching randomly online all I'm coming up with is your typical minimum wage jobs or ones that require a specialized degree for that field. Only thing I won't do is anything on commission. It's got to be a guaranteed check each week or two. Any thoughts/suggestions on what to look at? Thanks -Emt1581 |

If I remember correctly you live in the Lehigh Valley right? And you're an EMT? Suburban/Cetronia/Sunny Amb are probably hiring. I'm sure part time two days a week you would be at about $300. Yup ABE. Hmm...that's an idea. I mean I'm already volunteering at one station. But I could look elsewhere for paid. Not sure that's what I'd be pulling in though. EMS pay around here is horrible!! The normal range is between $10-$12 an hour. So it'd be closer to $150-$200 after taxes than $300. Thanks -Emt1581 |

I spent the last five years working for Lifestar until they shut our base down. I understand they were on the higher end of the payscale but I was making about $14 with them. And be careful with Sunny, scandalous motherfuckers running that place. |

Followed a Lifestar rig back because our GPS wasn't working and their station was right down the street from one I was at. Turns out there was a Lifestar station down in that area. Must have looked awfully goofy to them to see us turn around after they headed in. Live and learn. Yeah, like I said, EMS wouldn't yield enough each week. Thanks though. -Emt1581 |

Interesting thread. I am in the Lehigh Valley also and was considering a part time job. Mainly for making friends as I just moved to the area and am 26.
Looking around at what is available, all I could find are near minimum wage jobs or crap that I simply am not interested in. The best job I saw was temp UPS or FEDEX for $16 an hour during the holidays. At the same token, for $10 an hour, I would almost rather have my hours to myself. It will be tough for me to find a gig that will be flexible enough for me anyways. I work full time, take college classes, and enjoy going back to VA once in awhile. |

I second that machine shop suggestion. I don't know how much you would make, but if you have common sense and are a good employee, there are a good number of shops out there that need part time help when things get busy. It all depends on the shop, I cannot stress that enough. But if you're a fairly handy dude with enough sense to keep yourself from getting hurt, there just might be a shop that will le you do their "bitch work." Things like basic cnc operation (I'm talking loading and unloading parts, then hitting the go button), deburring stuff, disassembling stuff, moving things around with the forklift, organising and cleaning things, topping off oil and fluid tanks, sawing raw steel sock, etc. It ain't the best work, but it can be an interesting change of pace, if that is what you are looking for. I have no idea what a shop would pay. Probably not too much, but you will learn a lot more than you'd think if you have charisma, and you land a job at the right place.
Call up a local tool and die or mould shop and ask them if they need a part time guy to come in and help with refurbish disassembles and cleaning work. It will put hair on your chest. I promise. Plus over head cranes are just plain awesome. I am extremy biased towards my own trade, FYI. God help you if this sounds like a fun way to spend your time.

substitute teacher. or since you have a master's, an adjunct professor at a JC. This is your answer. it used to be that they would call you at the buttcrack of dawn if they needed you but now with computerized scheduling systems, you can actually schedule your jobs in advance clear into June. Depending on the size of the school district, you can even pick up work pretty much every day if you so desire. In my local district, subs make $115 a day. More, if you sub for special ed. And you never know. Working with kids in classroom environment might nudge you to go full time into pursuing education as a career path. |
