Recently unemployed and looking for a new job. I admit I am a bit shocked by some of these job ads. A good example, wanted Librarian, minimum qualifications, master degree Library sciences plus one year verifiable experience, internship or bachelor degree and ten years verifiable experience as a librarian. No relocation approved, full time. $32000 - $35500 annual. Medical benefits NO
Ouch, I cant imagine a masters degree with experience and only $32K

Yep, it's amazing. I was laid off during the "recession". So I know what you are dealing with. No Lie, I saw an add for a receptionist, pay was 10 or 12 dollars an hour, bachelor degree required. LMAO...

ETA: But I guess these are the days when raising a family on a minimum wage job is the norm????

What kind of work are you looking for?

Library Science degree? Can't say I'm surprised about a lack of demand for that.

I have been looking for IT jobs for 8 months. Around here most job listings are for Senior positions with 10+ years of experience or entry level where no degree is required. Pretty hard to find a mid-level position.

Used to be a guy could get a well-paying job with one of the domestic manufacturing companies/suppliers/tooling shops, etc. Then it became cool to buy foreign shit. Now we live in a "global economy" (say that whenever you're out of work and broke, it'll make ya feel better) with a service-based American economy full of office worker pussies and fast food workers.

Construction estimator, field engineering supervisor was my last gig. Enjoyed the job and was good at it. Politics and a new boss with a desire to bring in his own people ended with me unemployed. I can operate heavy equipment, carpentry, basic plumbing and pipe fitting, I can Arc and Mig weld, worked as a millwright for seven years, trained as a machinist, didn't finish my engineering degree. Spent a decade before that guarding nuclear material. Right now just looking for anything

Don't worry OP, you're likely well overqualified to be a Librarian anyways... that is as long as you're at least 18 years old and graduated from high school. They're not going to find someone with those requirements who will accept the job.

Still crazy though.

When I was job searching last year, I either found senior positions or entry level positions that wanted an active TS clearance and 3-5 years experience. Me thinks that's asking a lot for entry level.

Finally found something that fit me and didn't have unrealistic requirements.

OP don't be too concerned by the qualifications posted on these jobs. People have to hire and so they imagine the perfect person to do the job and craft a job description. There are many people who get jobs that don't fill every expectation.

In fact most of the time if you are looking for jobs posted online or otherwise, it is too late for you. The hiring people now have to sort through hundreds (or more) people.

Check out Dan Miller's 48 Days book and resources, (Cheap online, probably at your library. He also has a useful free podcast and blog).

HERE is a link describing the process. It works.

Op, I read some good advice a few weeks ago. It said to go ahead and apply for any job that you're 70% qualified for. It was based off of some study that showed businesses treat postings as more of a wish list than a mandatory list.

They know that very few people will fit everything, they're most likely trying to just weed out the clearly unqualified. Your personality in the interview and if you seem like a good fit for the company is usually more critical than an exact number of years experience.
