Chesty puller was a hell of a man. Merry Christmas and good night Chesty, wherever you are Never heard of him so just looked him up. He certainly was :) "Where do you put the bayonet on the damn thing?" (upon seeing a flamethrower demonstrated for the first time)

Chesty Puller was a life long Marine who was in the thick of battle across his long and distinguished career and deserves more respect than that. |

He didn't spend a couple years doing the tourist thing in Europe then go to Hollywood to star in some cheesy westerns. Chesty Puller was a lifelong warrior starting off with killing cacos in Haiti, then Sandinistas in Nicaragua, then Japanese Imperialists in WW2 before topping off his career by killing Chinese Commies and Norks in Korea. After the war(s), he went home to Virginia and raised other Marines to protect our nation. |

So I was wondering, what service has had more double awardees? Turns out the Navy has had more people awarded the MOH for seperate actions than any other service. But only two men have been awarded the Navy Cross 5 times and Chesty is one of them the other a sub captain Rear Admiral Davenport |

Everything I've read about Chesty Puller seems to indicate that he was down to earth and had a sense of humor. I am sure that he would have had a witty come back for Old Painless.
Apparently when Chesty Puller retired, he had his retirement party together with the rank and file. He did not party with the officers at the officers' mess because he loved the men that he commanded and who fought with and for him. And at the end of the party, Chesty told his driver to remove the license plate from Chesty's vehicle. The plate bore three stars and Chesty presented the license plate to one of the enlisted men. Chesty Puller was more than just a great warrior. He was a humble good man. |
