I use a Pelican backpack like this for school. Seems to work great for my needs. It's the S105.

I like the Rush 24 pack I think it is, but I don't own one.

Get something from Kelty, Mountain Hardware, or Lowe Alpine. In fact, just go to REI and buy something you like. They have a great return policy and they typically don't sell junk. The store brand is good stuff too.
This is coming from someone who owns probably 5 backpacks, none of which are "tactical".

I've got both the 5.11 Rush 12 and the MSM Adapt pack. Both would fit the role you're looking for nicely.

I just bought one of the Midway USA brands in camo for $39.95 on clearance.  Super nice pack and a steal at that price.

I like my Rush 24, but the Rush 12 might be better for your stated use.
Exceptionally durable. Tons of useful pockets. Expandable/upgradable with MOLLE accessories.

Professional?  Any of the gucci daybags from REI or any laptop bag would suffice.  I have a Janesport I got cheap from REI-Outlet.com that I use a lot day-to-day and camping; also have a black leather shoulder laptop bag that I got from some mall "leather store" that I'll use for the business side of "business casual".

Student?  I usually picked up what ever the Army/Navy store had lying around.  Still have a couple that I keep tools and various supplies in.

I work on a range so it is open to interpretation on whether or not I am a professional

Or- pretend to be an operator, as you travel to the grocery store and gas station. :)
I've never seen a single anti-gun thing from REI. They don't even prohibit carry at the local one.
