Looking for a dedicated set of winter tires but have some rather special conditions.  Vehicle is used for a rural mail route in eastern Montana.  Lots of miles, terrible roads, weird weather, lots of starting/stopping, etc.

What have you guys had experiences with?

Internet points to those from MT, ND, SD and WY as they can literally picture the shitty roads I'm talking about.

General Altimax Arctic for excellent budget set or Hakkapalitta for slightly more money. Blizzaks are great but wear out fast and between them and the Generals they really are not better. Look at the tirerack.com reviews. I've owned two sets of Blizzaks. I would go with something else.

I've been all over the roads your talking about. My wife is from SD, west river and we drive out your way all the time visiting and site seeing.

I have Nokian happikkawhatever R2 SUV tires on the Subaru.  I cannot believe the difference compared to a wrangler with all terrains and limited slips on both ends.

Edit.  These are true snow tires. I had to put them on in august.  After 8k miles I can barely start to see wear.  They are a flexible rubber though.  For all year I would recommend the WRG2 or 3.

When I ran winter tires on my car several years ago I ran Dunlop Graspics. The only time I ever got stuck was being high centered on packed snow fucking around. When it was snowing it was like the roads were dry as a bone, and getting the how the fuck did this pos make it up the ice covered hill when 7 other cars got stuck from a cop was priceless.

Duratrac's look like a good year-round tire, not so much for dedicated winter set?  Would have to go with a nonstandard size for these.

The General's Altimax look the best from the survey numbers.

I have the Cooper ST2's (studded) on one car and Cooper SA2's (no studs ) on another.  Going on our 5th winter with the ST2's.  Great snow tire.  Puttin Cooper AT3's on the jeep in the spring

That Jeep will get beat to shit at that rate of mileage on Montana back roads, get a real four wheel drive I would suggest something like a mid 200o's four runner and you can put some "real tires" on it and be able to chain up if needed.

(This is coming from the alignment guy for a tire shop) In Montana no less

I would get any dedicated snow tire that is studdable if your state allows studs.

It isn't mine.  Tires will be x-mas gift.

And for her birthday I'm thinking some type of suspension kit.    At least some beefy springs and shocks once the aftermarket parts start showing up.

All cars get beat to shit on those roads and the dust can be just as bad as the washboard.

Yeah, I didn't think they could be smaller than 29, but they are.  Tiny tires for a Jeep.  That said, they're excellent in the snow for an AT if anyone else cares.  Been running them on my truck for the last year or so from dirt roads and highway 6+ inches even towing 5-8k no problems.

Blizzaks are some of the BEST winter tires. They are soft and will wear out fast if you don't have a summer tire set.

Also studded Duractracs--but the siping sucks on them if you don't plan on installing studs.

That's the thing, too soft and the tires just get chewed up on the gravel.

Si, I would only run those studded.  I don't know how blizzacks would handle in deeper snow though, which seems like it would be a concern for non-plowed roads and drifting.  Gravel also hard on them.

We carry Nokian Nordmans and the Hancook Ipikes, both studable and they seem to do a good job. Hakapaleta's are a very good tire as well. I also put the Nordmans on the wife and daughters vehicles and they run them year round, but they don't see near the mileage or conditions you mentioned.

FWIW We have three customers that do the rural mail/paper route thing and they all run the Nordmans and don't seem to have any problems that I have been made aware of.
