First time having to purchase homeowners insurance and want to make sure that the full value of all of my firearms are covered.
What insurance companies does everyone have? Did they ask about your firearms or any details pertaining to them (not that I would go with a company who did)? Sound off. |
| This is not something you want to take for granted. Homeowner policies vary greatly on firearm coverage and replacement. Some require a picture/appraisal of all firearms, some only cover 1 or 2 thousand dollars. Same with jewelry. Make sure you know what exactly is going on with your policy BEFORE something happens. |

Buy a safe or buy a better safe. It is cheaper than insurance. Your insurance company is probably going to want serial numbers, photos, and appraisal. That makes insurance extremely expensive. They usually cover a set amount. NRA covers a set amount. A rider will be required to go over the amount, and that is when they get picky.
Many specialty insurances cover all loss, even mysterious, theft at the range, damage, theft from your car, etc. That is why they are so expensive. All I would really want is fire and theft while guns are at home. I bought a better safe, security system, security cameras and DVR, and layered my security. Locked doors all the time, perimeter lighting, etc. |

Quoted: My insurance covers 100% of the value of my firearms their accessories and ammo. I have Farm Bureau. However I must add, that I have a 2 million dollar umbrella policy and it also covers lawyer costs associated with a SD shooting. Are criminal legal costs are covered by your umbrella policy? |

I have State Farm. I added a rider for my firearms. I didn't have to provide them with serial numbers or inventory. I just need to have an inventory (which I do, MyGunDB) in case of loss or damage. This- when I lived in TN. Now, I live in Florida where it is impossible to get home insurance from a company that you have heard of. It is hard enough to get that I don't dare risk asking them about guns. |

I'm not sure, I doubt I could file a claim if I knocked over a gas station or performed some other dindu act. But I specifically asked my agent about SD shooting in my house and in defense of a 3rd party and she showed me the line item on my policy where this was addressed. |

Quoted: 99% likely there is a sub limit for Theft on firearms. Ask your agent. This. The "your guns aren't covered" thing is a myth. Most policies, however, limit loss by theft. You will need a specific additional personal property (named items) policy, just as one would have for a Rolex or something.

TYPICALLY they are covered from loss for all named perils (broad form coverage). Say a safe burns up in fire $10k loss in firearms. That would be covered in full less deductible on coverage C.
There is typically a theft exclusion that limits loss to $1-2k. Most companies allow you to endorse for more coverage. |

have to be careful lots of agents either dont know or were told wrong or maybe even lie
majority of companies out there have a limit of around $2k sometimes less very few will let you schedule firearms, other things yes but firearms are a no if you have much more than 2 or 3 guns its best to carry a seperate policy this is advice I will give yet not take... I have got to sit down and get some coverage |

I'm with Farmers Insurance. They insured a "base" amount of $2500 worth of firearms on my normal policy but I purchased a rider to increase the coverage, it was an extra $50/year for a $5K rider plus another $5/year per each additional $500 rider increase over the $5K. Yes they did need to know what the firearms were, I had no problem with that.

Yes, firearms are covered for "Named Perils" not "All Risk" and there are limits for certain perils (like theft). If you have a specific, high-end, hard to replace firearm, you might want to think about specifically insuring the one firearm under a Personal Articles Policy. PAP's generally have broader coverages as well. I'd suggest the same for a very large collection. Most modest collections ($10,000 and under) can be handled under your regular HO policy - just make sure your agent increase the Firearm coverage commensurate with your collection. Caveat: it's been a few years since I was a HO adjuster. Terms can change state by state. YMMV. |

Try a bunch but for sure...check with Amica. Rated very high (I've never filed a home claim but....)
I have home/auto through them. Took car of a "not at faullt" accident stupid fast.... They did ask about firearms including if any were semi-auto. I'm covered up to 5k on a standard policy. |
| I have statefarm and got a personal articles policy to cover my guns, bikes, and tractor. They are covered for any type of loss no matter the location. No deductible and full replacement value based on my receipts. An no hit on homeowners if I need to make a claim for them. |

A lot of HO policies cover the dwelling under all perils, but contents on a "named peril" basis. Theft is not generally excluded, but it has a fairly low special limit ($1k - $5k). I recommend a separate firearms specific policy. The NRA has one, it looked decent the last time I read through it. That said, a good safe is probably the best single form of insurance that you can buy. A safe, with a good HO policy, and a separate firearms policy is best. |

This person will likely provide more accurate info regarding coverage and exclusion questions than most agents. |
