Looking for a good one......just wondering what info you guys had to offer. Thanks!

I don't know if there's a "good" one, as most seem decent.  My wife gets the Sunbeam brand ones.  Use for maybe 3 years, it dies, buy a new one.

I've never used one at home, but I have the large sunbeam ones from Walmart that I use to cover up work when it's chilly, they seem keep my material warm enough.

Heat rises. What you want is an electric mattress pad with dual controls.

This.  Don't spend too much, all the new blankets/pads have crazy sensitive safety features.  They die after a couple years.

My recommendation is that, no matter which one you buy, always remember to turn it off when leaving it.

My Mom's EB shorted out in the chair while she was off shopping.  House was burning when she got home.

The house didn't burn down, but it wasn't pretty.

Always turn it off.  I would maybe even unplug it.   But that's just me.

When I was a kid the ones we had got pretty toasty.  I tried some of those Sunbeam ones from Walmart a couple years ago and it didn't even feel like they turn on.  I returned them and got a couple more regular blankets.

Friend of mine has one.  He loves it.  I'd never heard of them before.  I would have assumed they'd be uncomfortable to lie on.

This.  I just don't like the feel of electric blankets - feels like a chain link fence sandwiched between two layers of thin fabric.

This.  I turn mine on about 1/2 hour before bed then turn it off when I climb in.  Works great.

Electric mattress pad.  I would get a low voltage one.  I don't wear tin foil often, but I have concerns about electric fields that close to the body for hours at a time.  The 12v models are effective, and less prone to cause injury.  The low voltage one I have works great.

None.

I had one and it caught fire on me in 1983. I awoke hot and caughing due to the smoke. I snatched it up and threw it in the shower to put it out, then woke my parents. No more electric blankets-ever.

I do that with an electric blanket.  Works just fine.  Of course I have other blankets as well.

That happened to my sister when we were kids living at home.

That said, we use an electric mattress cover with dual controls and love it. On cold nights we leave them on all night at a low setting that keeps us comfortable. On more moderate nights we warm up the bed with them and then I shut my side off. My wife leaves her side on.

My wife got one, I'll have to check the tag on it, it's quite effective.

I used to let our elderly cat nap on it with supervision.  She loooooooooved that thing.

It still scares me that it'll burn the fucking house down though.  I've heard some pretty melodramatic shit about them.  We've got down comforters that will not burn the fucking house down.

Wife and I use the sunbeam ones from walmart. If you can wait they usually mark them down around March or April to half price. Our first one has lasted 3 years so far but I got 2 more I picked up on deal in the closet.

We just put our blanket under all the others so it's hardly noticeable and preheat it about 30 minutes before bed time.

I'm with you.

I saw what can happen if an electric blanket is not turned off. It took some white sheets and scorched them so bad they turned brown, I don't think it would have been much longer and they would have caught on fire.

This. I have a low voltage Serta one I got on amazon. I never turned it above 5 (out of 10) in a camper in.North Dakota last winter when.it was -30°  and -60° wind chill.

This.

Have used them off and on for 50 years.

Currently using a Sunbeam from Walmart, it's good, but seems to be fading.

Need to turn it on several hours before bedtime to take the chill off.

When it was new, 3 years ago, bed was toasty after 45 mins.

I assume the electronic controller is dying, anybody got any ideas?

I think throw it out and get a new one, they're kind of disposable and I don't trust a worn one.

Another vote for the heated mattress pad.

When my grandmother was dying of cancer she was getting cold really easily during the night. The heat system just wasn't cutting it so I spent the money on a heated mattress pad for her. She said it worked so well she didn't even need to heat the whole house anymore.

Texas white water season is mostly in the winter.  Used to do a lot of truck camping when I kayaked.  Electric blankets kick ass if you have electricity at the camp sight.  32 outside and butt naked warm and cozy in the bed of my truck (camper shell)

I bought one of these.

They have a computer in them now, and don't stay on constantly like the old ones did that would catch on fire.

This. I LITERALLY bought an early 00's model off of ebay 10 minutes ago. 100% acrylic with no timer. Pure bliss.

Keep your microfiber plush non-heating heat blankets.

Seconded.   A mattress pad is nice.

A few years ago we had an electric blanket catch fire while we were sleeping.
I happened to wake up and noticed a glow from the foot of the bed, the damn blanket
was on fire.
