There are a bunch of videos and sites that tell you how to polish parts and modify springs.  I was just checking some out yesterday as getting a drop in match trigger for a .170 diameter Colt trigger group is a bitch.  I'm glad most of my guns are .154.

This is one method

I think I used a slightly different method on the hammer spring. Rather than cutting one leg, you can just let that leg rest under the hammer pin, on the receiver floor.

The best way to improve the milspec trigger is to improve the finger pulling it, and the brain controlling that finger.

Or....just spend $94 and get a really nice trigger for not a lot of $!

You'll waste a lot of time fooling around with the stocker.....I put one of these in for a friend and was surprised how nice it was!

Get an ALG QMS, sell the old trigger group on the EE.  You'll break even or be out a max of $10-20.  I've done this for all of my rifles/carbines that have a non-premium trigger group.

I've spent my fair share of time grinding, polishing, and fitting. My best never came half as good as a Geissele.

SSA-E's for under $200, this time of year. I think I was some deals for sub-$180 SSA-E's.

I was messing with a GI trigger not too long ago, that a guy at work had modified, by adding a set screw into a hole drilled and tapped up under the trigger guard to adjust the take up and reset. Then he did a simple polish job. It was surprisingly good. Good enough in fact I intend to figure out how to do it to a couple of lowers I have. I've got several aftermarket triggers including a couple of Geissele's and while it can't really compare to the best of those, it was good enough that I was really surprised it started as a milspec trigger.

Shoot it.

It will smooth over time.

A couple few thousand dry fires work too.

I have had good results from changing the trigger/hammer/sear spring with a kit from JP Rifles:

http://www.jprifles.com/1.4.8.3_spring.php
I've used the JPS3.5T the most and have the JPS3.5 in 1 rifle where I wanted to experiment with a lighter trigger. Have had zero issues using these springs. With the 3.5T kit I've had no light strikes, even using Wolf and Tula steel cased. I have only used domestic brass cased with the 3.5 kit but again have had zero issues.

Inexpensive and easy to install.

One thing I have done is to use a touch of lapping compound on the hammer / trigger interface.
(1000 grit clover compound) and with just the lower in hand dry fire, after applying the lapping compound to the hammer, keeping the hammer captive in my off thumb.
Several (few dozen to several hundred) times while watching a movie etc.
disassemble and clean thoroughly with solvent  the reassemble using a good gun grease.
Have ended up with some very nice triggers this way.

Don't get too aggressive or carried away you just want to mate and smooth the hammer / sear interface. Not cut though the case hardening.
Brownells carries a few different lapping compounds, in a pinch I've used valve grinding compound from the local auto parts store.

Get out the sandpaper, grinder, and lapping compound.

Grind, then file, then polish all your trigger surfaces until you are JUST through the surface hardening that will make your trigger unsafe or malfunction.

Then throw that shit in the trash and go buy an ALG or a RRA 2-stage for under $85 and be done with this silly business.
12/1/2014 9:53:23 PM EDT
[#28]
Taking files and stones to a trigger isn't a very good idea unless you spend allot of time researching methods.

Will agree with the others. Dry fire it a fuckton, shoot it a fuckton. Your fire control muscles will get better and so will your trigger.

JP Rifle Spring Kit

For $120 you can get their whole trigger, but I've heard tell that just swapping to their springs helps.

I sent my lower in and had them install the trigger.  I'd do it again, its very good for my use (3Gun).

I've never handled one, but it's basically a Milspec trigger that's been worked over by Geissle.

Let somebody who knows what they're doing polish it for you. A friend did mine on my last lower. It made a pleasantly noticeable difference. Took a lot of the grit out and it feels like a much crisper break.

I've sent a few to Bill Springfield. For $35 out the door per trigger, they are really great.

I'd love to get a SSA for all of my ARs. But the cost of that trigger times six would get really expensive. Some guns don't need a $250 trigger where a $65 trigger will do fine.

JP 3.5# springs and grip set screw mod, bob the hammer and you shouldn't have light strikes. Still no Geissele, but better than stock. PA still might have G2Ss for $132, can't beat that.

sharpen the sear edge, like sharpening a knife.

but, you gotta know what you are doing. DIY trigger mods could make it a dangerous gun.

This is what I've done to all my AR rifles.  I have a Spyderco Ceramic File set that was given to me some years back.  I use it to lightly dress the machined surfaces and then some Flitz on a dremel polishing wheel.  Combined with the set screw, it works really well.

I use a toothpick to apply grease to all the friction surfaces and the insides of the pin holes in the trigger, hammer and receiver before installation.  I put grease on the pins too.  It seems to help smooth the trigger out right off the bat.

I do a modified version of this...it is no Geissele...but when I have less than $200 in the gun (including optics and mags) I do not want to put a $200+ trigger in it....

I can get a good 3.5-4 lbs. trigger using stock parts...

I also will sometimes use JP springs
