Anyone else having trouble with mice this fall... we didn't see shit all last season.  We just caught the third one in a week.

I have caught two mice in my house recently.  First time in beaucoup years.

I finally got some regular mouse traps at Walmart today.  Others in mid Colorado are having a similar problem.  The mouse traps have been selling faster than water in the Sahara recently.

I wonder if BirdDog is having this problem.

It's normal to see mice around once it gets cold in the fall and in when there are cold snaps in the winter.

Yea I've caught 3 so far and the cats have gotten another 2 and left them as presents for me. I worked out a deal with the cats for every mouse they catch they get a can of wet food

Be careful handling mice.

They can transmit hantavirus

We have been battling a mice problem at work so I purchased a few electronic Rat Zapper traps. No mess at all and a set of batteries are supposedly good for 50 kills.

The cats are lazy... our little dog on the other hand is BRUTAL if he catches one... it takes a pretty big bribe to get it away from him.

Chlorine (bleach spray)?  This issue seems to be associated with their poopage but research.  Still treating the body as if it has ebola can't hurt.   I have plenty of disposable surgical gloves just for this and other needs.

I've read the virus lasts only 2-4 days in the feces and urine but I take no chances.

I used to work in a steel mill, one winter we had a REALLY bad mouse problem... you could sit in the breakroom and count no less than 10 or so while eating lunch...

Being in maintenance we decided to make a better mouse trap

We took a foot long piece of 2x6 glued a great big washer onto it... then we put a lag bolt in the center of the washer... soldered the wires of a drop cord to the washer and one to the bolt... then we smeared some peanut butter on top of the lag bolt and plugged it in... when the mice would lean up to get the peanut butter they would complete the circuit and cause a dead short... it would cook 'em almost instantly.  We had more damn fun with that "mousetrap"...

At our last monthly meeting, all our 25+ year guys said they are having a terrible year with mice and rodents in general. (We're an IPM company of 30 techs) They can't remember a year so bad. I'm getting mouse calls all the time now from people who are telling me they've never had a problem.

Last week, I did a condo where the mice in some lady's kitchen chewed her kitchen utensil handles (wood) so badly, when I opened the drawers, it looked like loose bundles of cigarette tobacco all over the place.

If you don't have pets or rugrats, go with D-Con.  Lots and Lots of it.   scoop it into mouse holes and seal them up with tinfoil.  Leave boxes where you see droppings.   Traps only get a fraction.

That works...

But that don't trip breakers and you don't get to hear them sizzle!

When I did Environmental Resource Management back home.....we had two really severe winters i will never forget, mostly because we took daily snow readings for our two ski areas at our resorts.
'93 and '95 were bad, and both of those winters we had to buy cases of D-Con for all of our outbuildings, well houses, etc. I'd never seen anything like it. We couldn't feed them enough! The years we were over run, we had epic snowfalls. In other years, we never did anything for rodents.

It will be interesting to see how this year pans out, due to what the guys at work say and what I'm dealing with.

I caught either 5 or 6 in one weekend couple weeks ago. I know there are a couple more in the house but they won't go to the traps.

If they won't take the peanut butter, try some bacon... it seems to work when nothing else will, just tie it on with some sewing string.

Yup....

Switch up the bait, turn the pans in towards the wall, look for runs, look for intrusion points into your home and fill with steel wool.

We got five a few weeks ago. Filled the suspected entry point with copper wool. Mix of glue traps and a zapper. Haven't seen any signs in over a week.

I property manage weekend homes, I am seeing mice getting into houses and outbuildings where we've never had an issue before.
And its only November.

While we were deployed to NAS Sigonella, a crew chief built a mangonel as a mouse trap.
The first time it functioned, it threw a rather large mouse around 50' across a hanger.
We all laughed pretty hard at that sight.

We laughed even harder when he reset it and faced it towards a wall.

I usually keep an eye on the cats... they will start acting "mousey" around a spot... we set a trap and literally within a couple hours we have him.

Mice make for great airsoft, living room safaris.

I don't have them on this puter or I'd post some of my stories.

We had a cabin in KY (shack, really) that was over run with them. The several, very large black snakes couldn't even keep up. Evening's entertainment was to sit a candle out on the ground with some crackers or whatever and pop them with a .22 pistol. You would literally get bored of shooting them.

They'd run across you when you slept. Woke up with one sitting on my chest, eating a cracker piece. Squashed on in my boot one morning. Lesson learned. Dump your boots out before putting them on.

My dad is deathly afraid of mice... I know  Anyway, we were on a fly in trip to Canada one year and we were overrun with them... one ran across my dad's forehead while he was asleep... he sat bolt upright in bed, only problem was these were bunk beds  He hit his head hard enough to have a HUGE bruise right across his forehead... we still tell that story around the campfire.

It's a heavy mast crop year, and the acorns started falling early.

Chow availability decreases mortality rate mid season. By August the population has gone exponential, right when the heaviest Mast drop happens.
The population explodes, and is supported by the chow, but they still need cover for winter.

Clear underbrush, destroy or scatter wood piles and piles of rubble, set out a shitload of poison blocks around the perimeter(The wire blocks are nifty and pet safe), block pathways and gaps into the house with steel wool and expando foam. All weather bait blocks, wired to the base of trees around the perimeter, and various places in outbuildings, keeps them from getting dragged off, and if set up with some thought, keeps pets from getting at them. All weather bait blocks.

Get them before they get into the house. Toss a couple dozen blocks in the attic where they ARE going to nest.
I'm going at it like mad in the barns, and am keeping ahead so far, but they just haven't let up. It doesn't help that the Chipmunks population has gone nuts as well...

The real fun comes next spring.
Mice and other rodents are literally public transportation for Tick Nymphs, and their population cycles mirror that of the mice.
Plan on a shitload of friggin' ticks next spring and summer.
