the wind in the wires made a tattle tale sound, when the wave broke over the railing So what do you think caused her to sink? Do you think she broke deep and took water? Official investigation report leaned towards her taking on water through her bulkheads, IIRC. |

Creepy true story about the Eddie Fitz for you superstitious types:
When she was launched in 1959 (I think that was the year, thereabouts anyway), at her christening ceremony, it took two strikes against her bow to break the champagne bottle. Old time sailors believed that was a VERY bad omen if that happened when a ship was christened. |

Official investigation report leaned towards her taking on water through her bulkheads, IIRC. my personal theory is not elaborate, and fits mostly with what you will find out there. I think she was modded one to many times. She failed inspection that season, we know for sure, and was due for dry dock when the season ended. but she sank instead. I think the one or more of the modifications failed under stress and she folded on a big wave, broke up and went down |

I was 8, at the time, and it made a hell of an impression on me. I grew up down the road from a Great Lakes Freighter Captain. He was on the Lakes the night of the Fitzgerald storm. (although they were in port) I'm still very close friends with his sons. His stories about life on the lake was always interesting to listen to. |

YES, and an old guy had an heart attack, he thought the ship was going to capsize and sink at the dock, did not start out well. ETA When let out of the slip, almost rolled over, not sure of terms, was 'spectacular'. |
