I know this has been asked before, but I never really had a problem with them then. Now it seems these M.F.ers are non-stop. Anyone have a remedy for this? I've heard of some programs, but they apparently effect other aspects of Internet Explorer, or something else all together. I've heard to disable Messenger, but I thought I had, with no success. Any links, program recommendations, or detailed instructions are welcomed. |

I tried using a program called PopUp Killer for a while, with mixed results. It will stop most ads, but it will also shut down some legitimate web pages, which can be very annoying. My hard drive is partitioned, with Win98 on one side and Lycoris Desktop LX (Linux) on the other, and I can't recall ever seeing a popup ad while browsing with Mozilla on the Linux side. |

If you have Norton's Internet Security you can open the ad blocking window and choose the level of protection that you want/need. Norton's is well worth the money. Tonight alone it has blocked 3 Trojan Horse attempts and one virus for me on my system. If you are riding bareback then you need to "block cookies". I don't know what system you are using but try this- you will need to go to your desktop and RIGHT click on the Explorer or Netscape icon. Then left click on "Properties". Go to the "Advanced" file and scroll down until you find "Cookies". Click on "Block cookies". You won't have as many popups, but some boards won't recognize you so you will need to remember all of your passwords, and other boards won't let you on. I hope this helps you, Mario |

The majority of these pop-up killers are little bits of code that runs continually when you are on a web site looking for "target" references in Javascript and HTML. Some sites have automatic pop-ups as navigational bars for a seperate window. Pop-up killers remove these too, and destroy the functionality of that site. The only way to get rid of pop-ups for good is to complain to every site you go to that has pop-ups. In some cases like GeoCities and AngelFire, pop-ups will always be unavoidable, because they pay for the free use of the site. - Nw - |
| Microsoft, in their infinite greed, has given up "Windows messenger service". If you have XP running you have to do a registry hack just to get it to show up in your add/remove programs. The problem is that every time you apply new updates it re=installs the damn thing. Microsoft is very intent on keeping this alive. I don't think a firewall can block it since it's running on port 80. I try to keep NoAds up and going but I still get the damn things everyday. I usually have 2 or 3 when I get home from work. When I get time I'm going to reload 2000 or get a new Mac. |

I'm not so much talking about the ads that pop up when you log on to a web page, as much as those DAMN messages that will randomly appear on my PC screen, even if Im not surfing the net. Gray boxes with black text. I'll wake in the morning to find like 15 on my screen, no browser being open. Maybe broadband is whats allowing this? Thse are what I want stopped. |

M4, I'm guessing you have XP and either a cable modem or DSL. At least that's my config. If someone can figure this out let me know. Otherwise, I'm blowing away XP and loading 2000. I haven't had a chance to try all of these but you may look at http://www.theeldergeek.com/messenger_removal.htm Let me know if any of them work. |

OK, that's not a pop-up. That's spy ware. Get one of the spyware cleaners like Ad-aware. Go to download.com and look for ad-aware. If you use any programs that came with GAIN or Gator or any other junk/spam/spyware stuff like those, the program wont work after running ad-aware. Karl. |

It's a little gift from Microsoft. Click start, run then type services.msc /s . Then scroll down and click on Messenger . Once it's highlited click on stop. This seems to be working for me right now. We'll see as time goes by. Let us know what works for you. |
