Finally got around to shooting the FAL and it does not cycle the 7.62 NATO rounds that ran through it. This is my first experience with an adjustable gas plug rifle so I did not adjust it yet.

I understand how it works. My main concern is: Can i damage the rifle by setting too low? Do i have to be mindful when changing ammo especially to hand loads and .308? I was told to get it where it cycles reliably and back it off a click.

Is the end plug oriented right? You can cut it off and its a single shot.

Yep.  I learned that from experience.

For the most part, set it and forget it.  I have fired everything from Indian Punjabi poppers to commercial hunting .308 through mine without ever changing it.

Cycling issues are usually gas flow issues, sometimes a bent piston, or resistance of some kind on the carrier.  Make sure the plug is not upside down.

I set mine by loading a single round in the mag and firing.  If the bolt doesn't lock back, open the port a click and try again--repeat as required.  When the bolt locked back on an empty mag, I open it two extra clicks and leave it there.  Might not be the right way, but it worked on 3 different FALs.

ETA:  DSA stainless, Imbel/DCI and an Entreprise.  To run reliably, they were all set around mid-range.  If I remember correctly, the DSA was set at 4, the Imbel/DCI and Entreprise worked best at 6.  Come to think of it, I had to replace the piston and gas tube on the DSA due to pitting so there was probably less blow-by...probably why it didn't need as much gas to operate.

The gas plug is design to shut off the gas to launch real rifle gernades from the muzzle which special ammo or not to adjusting the gas to working in harsh conditions or a real dirty rifle.

You need to go to the FAL forum in the armory section.

It's an Israeli Heavy Barrel T48, not an L1A or the likes. I could be wrong but i don't think i have a gas cutoff selector like in the above video. Just has the adjustment knob 1-7.

Shutting off the gas to fire grenades in an Israeli rifle is done by turning the plug upside down.

Got it. Pushed the pin and turned it 1/4 and i popped right out. Was set with the hole down and notch up. I'm assuming that is "Open". I should mention the adjustor was set on 7 when i fired it.

I'd close the regulator all the way and see if it functions.  If it does, open it back up a ways and go through the standard procedure of loading and firing a single round at a time from the magazine, in the assault position (don't shoulder it).  Close it one click per shot until the bolt locks back.  Close it one or two clicks more after that and you're done unless there is some problem with the rifle.

If that gets it running, great.  If not, update the thread with the way it is behaving and we can diagnose from there.
