I just got home from the Armory.  Local WI ARNG unit of the 128th infantry, "The Red Arrows".  I am observing an FTX this weekend, and while the local NCO's sold me pretty hard on enlisting as a 94A (they would like to nab someone older and responsible to fill the armorer slot which is now open....and I love to work on guns and stuff), I also want to get dirty and have the training available I could get as an 11B.  Plus 11B has double the enlistment bonus and I would get the GI Bill kicker which comes out to $7200 a month.  The local unit is converting from anti-tank to light infantry/Air Assault and is being upgraded to "enhanced" at the brigade level.  So I already have a difficult MOS decision to make if I do enlist.  Then I see a related post right here that it's not too hard to get screwed!  At this point I am investigating enlisting as one of a few options in my life and I was already afeared of the famed military beaurocracy.  Great!

I was told by a friend and active duty recruiter that NG can be really cool if your unit is squared away, or it can really suck if your unit is comprised of slackers.  The local unit's readiness NCO and supply NCO are hardcore.  They tell me I can still play in the mud as an armorer, just have to handle those responsibilities first.  Also would have a much better chance of making E-5 and above and also going full time, as in the next few years that armorer slot is going to become a full time job.  What do you guys think?  Gimme feedback please.

Edited to add:  I am 32, 6'2" 176, strong and in decent shape.  I work in a position where I supervise train movements over 600 miles of railroad and all associated employees and equipment along with safety of the public, and worked my way there from hammering spikes in 4 years, so I'm used to responsibility and not a slacker.

Hell no you don't want no REMF MOS.

Go 11B.  Most armorers are 11B anyway.  Are you sure he didn't mean 92B  (supply guy MOS, usually does Armorer duties as well).  The armorer is the guy who knows the most about guns.  Almost never the actual 92B slotted.

go 11b
go 11b
go 11b
And make sure they give you airborne.  The Army is only good to you once, when you first go in.  In case I didn't make my point.
Go 11b

Sylvan, according to the local recruiter, as NG I cannot go to jump school, no matter what MOS.  I specifically asked if I would have that opportunity.

94A is food service tech. Do not sign up for that, even if they will let you pass out guns inbetween chopping meat up 14 hours per day.

Tell him 45B (small arms repair) or 11B w/jump or he can go pound sand. Have a friend along who will not interact with the jammer, to drag you out when the lier's crap gets too good for you.

HS, the 94A was something the recruiter pulled out of his *ss when I asked what MOS the armorer slot was.  I do know I would be working for the supply NCO, I believe it is technically some sort of supply job.  I take it his statement that 11B part time Guardsmen can't do jump school was baloney?

Holy Shit! Find an aviation unit and get into the 67 series MOSes.

From what I understand, and mind you this isn't guarnteed nor am I saying I am not wrong, but from what I understand and remember, it is very rare for a Guardsman to go to jump school, most states don't want to pay to send you there.  I could be wrong, but this is the way I understand it.
Mind you, here in Arizona we do not have any infantry units, we are all REMF (I am a military police, closest we get to combat arms)

Go reserves if you can.  They have more money and can get you the same slots as active duty for schools.  see the tacked post in GD about getting screwed by the guard

What aviator said! You like Air Assault? I am in A 1-147 in Madison and we will do some of that this weekend at McCoy I believe. Then the rest of the Bn gets mobilized while my Co stays here. :( Wrenching and flying, its the best gig an enlisted guy can get! I am a recent convert to 67T. 92Y is supply MOS, responsible for running the arms rooms in addition to the expendable/durable property and related paperwork. Many times another guy, infantry, tanker, whatever, who has been around the gear long enough will be assigned to the arms room, leaving the 92Y open for all supply work. That was my MOS for 12 years, four in the Regular Army, and till recently in WI Guard. I never worked in an arms room myself, never that lucky and small arms repair was my first choice years ago. If your part time, go with something really fun, full time (tech, AGR) is going to send you through many positions and schools over the years, start anywhere, its all good.
