How many 5 gallon batches of beer can you brew with one 20 lb propane tank ? I'm talking about full 5 gallon boils.

how much water and how long do you boil the wort? 30 min?
i put in 5 gal of water, put the lid on and turn it up to after burner.

when it starts to boil i cut the fire way back.  maybe the flame tips are 1/4" -- 3/8" from the burner.    and let the wort simmer for 30 minutes with the lid on.  you can run many batches this way.

I start with water around 105 degrees F. Heat to 150-160 degress F for 30 minutes, then boil for 1 hour.

According to my calculations, using my gas stove to do this is costing me about $25 in natural gas ! [shock]

I'm definately gonna get a burner and use propane tanks once it gets warmer.

If you allow your lights to hang 6 - 8 inches below the tops of your plants, you'll maximize not only your verticle light, but horizontal as well...

Do you mash, or just brew extract?

I'm an extract brewer too. Not enough room to mash in my apartment. If I were you I'd go to beeradvocate.com and ask those guys. They are to beer what ar15.com is to guns. I just moved back to the states and am getting ready to make my first batch in a year. I'm thinking about a nice big strong IPA. But then again, after drinknig this bottle of Duvel, I might be making a Belgian tripple or something. Good luck on your project.[beer]

Philadelphia_GunMan;
I've brewed about 6 batches so far with my most recent tank. I think I have another 2 or 3 to go before refilling.  For extract (and partial mash that I do) you can use about 2.5-3 gallons for boil.  This cuts down on that mass needed to be cooled when the boil is done and the energy needed to achieve and maintain a boil. Also, I throttle way back once the wort starts to boil ... just enough to maintain it.

I feel like such a dumbass. I calculated the amount of gas I use to make a batch correctly, but I fucked up when reading the bill. It only costs me 25 CENTS to brew, not $25 ! Doh

it depends on your burner. MIne will do about 5-6 batches at 1hr boil for gallons of water/wort.
