I want to hide the icons on my desktop, but the blankety-blank-blanking System Administrator has deactivated the ability to turn my desktop into a web page (or whatever it's called).

Any ideas how to get around this (via the registry, for example)?

HELP!

As a "blankety-blank System Administrator" (among other functions I perform at work), I recommend that you first try "Social Engineering" to get around the difficulty.  Talk to your System Administrator.  Be nice.  Be friendly.  Show him or her that you have the maturity and technical competence to merit an exception to policy.

Don't risk getting yourself fired by dinking with the Registry.  The best possible outcome from such an effort would be getting branded as a troublemaker.  If you want to play with system settings, do it on your own *&^%$# computer!

I could tell you how to do it, but then I'd have to shoot you.

Yep... about the only way to try to get around that is to make nice to the system admin... As far as I know, there is no way around domain assigned group policies.

For the evil side of the equation, you could always download L0phtcrack and see if the Administrator account password can be extracted from the hashes in the SAM file.

[devil]

Note: Doing such and getting caught is likely to result in termination of your employment.  I suggest that you talk to your SysAdmin and be nice to him/her.  Give him/her gifts of expensive/ubergeeky hardware.

You should take the System Administrator out for a nice lunch.  Reward the sys admin with bottles of his or her's favorite liquor.  Really good homemade bread and German chocolates are usually a safe bet as well.

What?  What do I do for a living?

Note:  I do have users that bribe me by dropping things off at my desk while I am running around.  My time is short between all the servers, upgrades and paperwork so they want to make sure their problems are always a priority when they call in.  What can I say?  It works.  [:D]

The SAM file is locked when Win2K is up and running.  SAM crackers are typically Linux boot floppies - You need physical access to the server to use them.  FWIW we use one at work once in a while, e.g. when someone who had the Admin password got terminated.

If Zaphod's SysAdmin is worth his or her salt, Zaphod will not have write access to the system Registry anyway.

OKAY, OKAY! I CRY UNCLE!

I'll go be nice to my System Administrator (assuming we can figure out whoever the hell it is...).

Thanks anyway!

P.S. - I found that cracker thing on the web, but the language being spoken there scared the hell out of me. No thanks!

What version of Linux?

I didn't have to use a SAM cracker to get into the last RedHat (7.2) box I had to crack.  RH has a nice step by step in their knowledgebase for resetting the root password.

The floppy we use is RH 6.1 I believe, but its purpose is to alter the local administrator password on an NT or 2000 machine.  It boots up enough to read the NTFS file system.  You can make a backup copy of the SAM to cover your tracks later if desired, and simply set the PW to whatever you want.

Zaphod, you are wise to avoid the Forbidden Sciences and the wrath of an angry SysAdmin.  Peace be with you.  Peace and tranquility.

Gotcha.  I haven't had to crack any M$ machines yet.  Just an old Novell server and the odd Linux machine here and there.

do you have local admin rights?

You can try but I highly doubt he will create a seperate group policy just for you.

It's worth a try though.
