I just got a call from my mom.

My parents took my sister and her 14 year-old son to a paid dove-hunt in central MS today.

As of right now, both state and federal game wardens are on the scene because the owner of the hunt was not in some compliance with the fields.

However, my sister is getting a citation as we speak for "not having the game birds in her possession.  It turns out that she killed one dove.  She put it in my 14 year-old nephew's game bag so she wouldn't have to keep up with it.

Pardon my ignorance, but isn't your MINOR child in your presence in your "possession" and therefore the bird is in her possession?  It seems that this is some sort of sting of the owner.  However, the unaware people are getting dragged in.

More details as they come in from calls from my mother.

Here's a story.
Friend of mine would sometimes ride around with a GW.
He had stuff to that day but went with him to check some fields the morning of opening season.

Right when they get there a mocking bird flew by and a hunter shot it.
Friend had to hang out in the field about 5 hrs. and give a statement to the FBI.

More details.

My sister sent a text. GW's are gone now. NM-- through interrogating her, but still on the scene. I do not know the status of her citation.

Owners of the field/hunt asked the hunters to hang around a bit.  I have no idea why, but it would be nice if it involved refunding their money (which I doubt.)

Hunt is shut down.

It seems that this "hunt" is a "Mom and Pop" operation, but it has gone on a few years.  I know they went to this hunt last year.

Because it is operating as a business, I suspect that the owners are in for a lot of legal hell now that they have been busted for a compliance violation.

I'll have more details once I get a text back from my sister.

my absolute favorite was an Oklahoma Duck Hunter that hit an Owl with his truck going on a morning hunt. he posted a picture on the net to be funny.  he didn't realize it would end up being a standoff situation, with State and Fed GW's and lawyers.

I think it ended up costing him $30K.

No. The birds need to be in the hunter's possession to determine proper bag limits.

ETA:
Think about it this way... A less than honest parent brings kid along so he can double his limit by putting his take in the kid's bag. I'm sure someone will chime in asking what the difference is because the "net" total limit is the same, but that's not how it works. Each hunter has his own take and some are better shooters than others.

That sucks, and is another sad example of an LEO who has lost his way and should find other employment.

Wrecking  a 14 yo 's early hunting experience will sour her /him on hunting for life. Do that enough times, no hunters, no need for Wardens.

Idiot needs to understand that he is there to SERVE the public.

Minor infractions should be dealt with in a low key way, with helpful movement toward compliance.

Misunderstandings helpfully corrected, fines and arrest reserved for those who are blatantly, flagrantly, and purposefully breaking the law.

Don't have the details, but just the fact that they're issuing fines for the location of a single bird tells a sad story.

That's considered a serious violation because people use it to dodge the limits. It's often done as you described, but the assholes ruined it for everybody. People who've spent much time hunting tend to know about this, so it's something that whoever was responsible should have known.

And the Warden is supposed to know that? I probably would've handled it differently, since the limit wasn't exceeded I probably would've made her carry her own bird and just warned. But I'm not a GW either and don't know how often he's run into this. (Possibly a lot.)

No.

That's considered a serious violation because people use it to dodge the limits. It's often done as you described, but the assholes ruined it for everybody. People who've spent much time hunting tend to know about this, so it's something that whoever was responsible should have known.

In my opinion, that's where a little common sense comes in.

My sister is a "soccer mom."  The only reason she is out there is because the boy's POS dad ran off with a woman in his congregation and left her when the boy was 3 years old.  She's done a great job of stepping up with "guy" things when my father or I cannot.

But she is hardly a hunting "machine."

Show up in court, plead in front of the judge to get the fine suspended but the validity of the penality upheld.  Talk to the citing Officer beforehand and see if she can cut a deal, get a lawyer.

She has several options if she really wants to make it go away.  If the CO thinks she is telling the truth and it was only a technical violation, he might work something out with her but he won't do it in the middle of the bust like today.  He is citing people and will sort it out later.

If I were her, I would just call him and try to talk with him before the court date.

GW should have just reminded and asked that the birds be retained by the actual person hunting. GW...jackass. Serves no public good to Inforce the law as an ISIS member.

And the Warden is supposed to know that? I probably would've handled it differently, since the limit wasn't exceeded I probably would've made her carry her own bird and just warned. But I'm not a GW either and don't know how often he's run into this. (Possibly a lot.)

It wouldn't take a rocket scientist to walk away considering that the combined birds of both my sister and her son was below the bag limit of ONE person-- i.e.  If they ALL belonged to ONE person, it was still below the bag limit for one person.

He got a bean, the trick is to find a way to let hem keep his bean and not screw her over.

Here in Texas land owners have to buy a license to allow people to lease their land for hunting.
The price of the license is tied to how much land you own.
