[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Who makes the best power tools? (Page 1 of 2)

| I'm in the market for a circular saw and the hand tool thread got me thinking. I've had cordless Dewalts at work and they hold up very well and we are pretty hard on tools. Is it worth going that route for home use? I like to buy once cry once with tools. |

I have had most brands and am now vested in the 20v DeWalts, I also have Makita (best 18v IMO) Milwaukee (very good) Ryobi (some good, mostly bad or cheap) First good battery circular saw was the Milwaukee 18v, sadly mine were stolen except for the sawzall I cannot say anything bad about the cheap Ryobi's, If you get the batteries cheap then they are not bad at all. Lightweight and the laser is actually usefull.

Corded circular saw aside, there's been a heck of a price drop in 20V max DeWalt cordless tools lately.
Last week I snagged the Brushless Dewalt 20V Impact / Hammer Drill Kit with the 2x 4.0 Ah batterys for $270 shipped off amazon. Hell Amazon has the double pack of 5.0 Ah 20V max batteries on prime for $166 w free shipping again too... that's cheaper than the old stud type 18v XRP batteries which were only 3.0 Ah. Can you tell I'm a Dewalt guy? I bought the Rigid corded circular saw though when my DeWalt 7 1/4" was stolen from the truck. I have nothing bad to say about the Rigid line of tools. |

Skil Mag 77 worm drive - I've had one for a couple years, it's a beast. http://www.homedepot.com/catalog/productImages/400/8c/8c5cd8fb-5768-46eb-9afb-c8676edafd9e_400.jpg eta: pic Yeah that thing is pretty bad ass |
| It really comes down to what kind of user you are. If you plan to only use them a few times a year then just about any of the name brands will work just fine for you. If you rely on your tools for your job then you might want to step up to some of the more expensive tools like Hilti and Festool. |

For Cordless
We heavily use Dewalt and Milwaukee at work .(Its our choice when we stock our truck) Both are good! Milwaukee pros: Alot more power! Battery has guage on it. Milwaukee Cons: Expensive, After a bit of hard work(Before the charging capabilities are shot) it doesn't keep a good connection and you have to keep hitting the slide in battery pack back in. DeWalt Pros: batteries lock in tightly/No connection issues. Deals can be found on replacement batteries pretty easily. Used kits can be found cheap and they last for ever. DeWalt Cons: Battery charging issues if conditions aren't ideal, less power than Milwaukee and I personally have burned up 2 drills drilling with a 13/16" auger bit through a 10" Pole. Never with a Milwaukee granted I use DeWalts twice as much. However that is asking alot out of a cordless drill. |

It kicked back on me ONCE, my fault, and the gear inside has a chipped tooth now. (I took it apart and looked) |

| I don't have much experience with cordless circ saws, but for corded Milwaukee has never let me down. Used them both professionally in my younger days and now for pretty heavy "consumer" use (lots of projects!). I like that Milwaukee offers both right- and left-hand drives. Only problem I've had is that both the saw and my Milwaukee 1/2" drill seem to have a problem with the cord wearing through right where it enters the strain relief on the tool body. Dunno why since I don't abuse them by lifting with the the cord or anything like that. |

Quoted: This, have had great luck wtih dewalt. I buy the new models just because I like the way they look, now have 2 working "obsolete" models in the garage and love my new 20v brushless drill. Seriously though if you're a homeowner and not going to use it much get a ryobi drill driver kit and the ryobi skillsaw. At Home Depot this will be under $200. The grey colored small batteries work very good and don't go bad in a month like the old ryobi crap.

Quoted: Depends on the particular tool, I am not a one brand is the best brand for all tools. with that said I do like Bosch, and Makita, Milwaukie has started to make more in China Hilti was mentioned they make good stuff. Porter Cable for routers

Do you really want a cordless circ saw?
If you're doing anything more than light work with it, you'll either need a bunch of batteries or a corded saw. If you don't have a circ saw, I would get one with a cord. I'd skip the worm drives too. If you needed a worm drive, you wouldn't be asking us. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

Festool - No one is a close second. I'm not going to argue with this, but when you get to the cash register, grab your ass with one hand and your wallet with the other. I use my tools most days, and I've been pleased with my Bosch and Porter-Cable stuff. The latter is owned by Black and Decker now, though, and it's anyone's guess what that means for the P-C brand long term. |
|
Yup, over the years Porter-Cable has been good to me. I had some dewalt batteries that lasted 15 years
Have a Bosch sander that is stout, but loud. Anything ryobi makes is crap. Drills are nice but you can't get good batteries or them Stuff at harbor freight is so cheap you just toss it after the job and buy new for the next one. |
