There have been threads lately about people getting pulled over and they put their keys on the dash.
Do you see this happen often? What do you think when it does? |

Have done it every time I've gotten pulled over, because I remember hearing from somebody (probably a cop) that it's a good idea, signaling you're clearly not intending on taking off. |

This person is probably a cop/friend or family member of a cop. They're the only people I ever saw do it. What's the reasoning behind it? Granted I have not been pulled over maybe 5-6 times in 20+ years of driving, but I never even recall switching the vehicle off, just put it in park and roll down the drivers window, and have your paperwork ready. |
|
Regional thing encouraged by local officers? Have to turn off the car to remove the keys...also shuts off the a/c on a hot day, so I vote not a a routine thing to do to regular everyday folks.
I would think rolling down your tinted window, car put in park, hands in view (on steering wheel) good enough...unless directed to do additional. When you stop a vehicle and all the occupants stick their raised hands up outside their windows, sure sign they have been living in a high crime area within the inner city and have frequent contact with the law. |

Since my key is wireless and spends it's life in my left pocket, surrounded by high bolsters (bucket seats) im not going to spend 10 seconds digging around in my pocket only to get a mag dump into my skull for "trying to reach for a gun".
Personal experience: 6 years ago, pulled over in highschool, after a dumbass drunk kid in my car (who i was giving a ride home) threw a lit fire cracker out the window. Cops saw it, pulled us over. Kid in my backseat was digging around in his pockets trying to get his ID ready, when the cop pulls approaches the car with his gun already drawn and points it right at his head, screaming "Dont fucking move motherfucker!" along with other obsenities, this is with other cops swarming my vehicle as well, as if we were the Boston bombers or something . Vehicle was searched against my consent at gun point. At the time as an 18 year old, i didn't understand that this was considered excessive nor did i understand my rights. But there ya go. No fucking way im putting my hands anywhere other than the top of the steering wheel when i get pulled over, so i dont get killed my a trigger happy new guy who thinks he's commando cause he was issued a tricked out M4 that he has wet dreams over using one day.
I sure wish the Lafayette P.D. had a public roster w/ pics |

I like to go through the felony stop moves without them even asking. Right hand out the window. With left hand remove the keys and throw from the vehicle. Right opens the car door. Exit vehicle facing forward with hands interlocked behind head.
I like the cops to get the sense they are dealing with a real pro. It's builds rapport. |

I'm not turning my engine off until I'm satisfied that I'm being stopped by a peace officer with reasonable suspicion, at the very least. I've motored away from more than one overzealous non-commissioned rent-a-cop. LOL Re-reading my post, I can see what's so funny. I derped. But it's true. I have rolled away (twice) from non-commissioned security vehicles that tried to make a traffic stop outside of the seaport. And once from a peace officer, but that's a story for another time.

Hold it by the muzzle and drop it on the ground before you do all that other stuff. Bonus points if you have a ski mask and some duct tape on the passenger seat. |

Sounded like good advice when I read it here last time, so I started doing it. I've been let go with a warning with my last four stops. Not sure if it's because of keys on dash or just not being a douche in general. This, I'm sure goes a lot further than the keys on the dash. I pull over, roll down the tinted windows on both doors and at night I turn on the dome light, be curtious, polite and honest. Been stopped and let off, far more times than I have been ticketed. |
| The ones that bother me are the ones that stop and immediately put their keys on top of the car and hold their hands out the window which normally seems to indicate they have been through a felony car stop before which tends to concern me. I haven't seen many put their keys on the dash. As long as they aren't reaching for things in the car or a known threat I treat them with the same level of caution. |

I'm not a cop, but putting your keys on the dash for being pulled over seems, like felon. |

I guess I'm doing something wrong, last time I got pulled over I looked at the rearview mirror when the
Officer was coming and he had his hand on his hand gun ready to pull it out.
But he ended up giving me a warning. Probably because I am very respectful to them And always reply with "yes sir, no sir". |

| Yeah, it seems pretty retarded to me tbh to do that. I will comply by keeping my hands visible and the car in park and in public I am polite to everyone anyway, so that would not be an issue but I will be damned if I am gonna toss my keys on my dash. I mean seriously, wtf? Might as well just hand the cop a fruit plate or something while you are at it. |
|
When I get stopped/pulled over I shut off the engine, open my window and put my hands on the wheel.
When the cop comes to the window I don't look at him and I don''t say a word until spoken to. At the first opportunity I disclose that I'm armed and I don't go for my paperwork until I get the ok to do so. Since I'm armed ( and I believe the cop knows it before he gets out of his car) I take no chances. I don't need extra orifices. |

| That doesn't seem normal to just turn your car off and put your keys on the dash. You more likely will be drawn out at gunpoint or given police brutality which seems to be the norm these days. And then be charged for assault and possibly shoot your overly "aggressive" dog if one is in the car with you. One of these will happen. |

Never know who your stoping. That was the first time I'd seen that, I thought I did something wrong. |

I sure wish the Lafayette P.D. had a public roster w/ pics Okay, I'll bite. Assuming cops saw something explosive being thrown from a moving vehicle, wouldn't there be probable cause to search the vehicle, sans consent? |
