anyone been there? Home of the IOM TT motorcycle race. I'd like to go see the race as well as rent and ride the course on a motorcycle (just to do it, I have no interest in the speed aspect of doing so) Might be too late to make any sort of plans for the 2015 TT, but ya never know. It's on my 'list'. |

I went in 2009. You gotta go to believe it.
I've race on most every track East of the Mississippi, and it did not prepare me to be a spectator at the IOM. They are fooking fast, five feet from where you stand. Prepare to drink and see lots of cool bikes. Those guys are bat shit crazy. The vids do not do it justice. |

Quoted: That's their tiny brain rattling in their skull. Badass to watch, and I'm sure it's a hell of a rush, but what a stupid way to die (as so many of them do). Quoted: Quoted: Every single one of those cats clank when they walk. That's their tiny brain rattling in their skull. Badass to watch, and I'm sure it's a hell of a rush, but what a stupid way to die (as so many of them do). Unless you have road-raced a motorcycle, you know not of which you speak, sir. |

Quoted: Definitely on my bucket list. Unfortunately, it will either be neutered or banned by the time I get there. Quoted: Quoted: On my list also. Probably not. It seems to get more popular every year, to the point that over-crowding is becoming an issue. Remember, the Irish have a different attitude towards attorneys and liability. It's possible to do stuff that will kill you, without having to ask permission from the State first. |

That is by far the best 31 seconds of motor sports sound ever recorded. |

I am going. I usually am the one who posts these IOM vids about every 6 months.
I am going over, buying a bike there, and shipping it home afterwards. There is simply nothing more badass on the entire planet. As a former road racer, it is something I have been looking at doing for years and years. The wife is on board with this amazingly. The wheelie corner at 3:40 is fucking hardon inducing. |

I was just hoping to rent one for a couple days, drive a few laps, see the island....go home. but your scenario is not something un-new to me, i've heard of others doing the same for european vacations, as sometimes its cheaper. |

I'd venture to say a lot of those riders have a much better appreciation of life than 90% of the population. |

I had a 900 Ninja that I rode the shit out of, so yes, I know how much fun it can be. But there are other races that aren't nearly so likely to kill you. Anyway, I think that all would agree that OD'ing on heroin is a stupid way to die, and there really is not a lot of difference, when it comes right down to it. TT racers are junkies, just the same, and they die getting high. |

And "rode the shit out of" certainly qualifies as "stupid way to die", but does not qualify as road-racing, as on a road-race track. You have no concept of the difference. Frankly, I consider your comparison of heroin to road-racing as an insult to me, and to every other road-racer out there. I certainly dont have your experience with heroin, but i sure as hell know what adrenaline can do, while racing. And there is a HUGE difference between dying of a heroin OD and going out in a motorcycle wreck on a racetrack, at least in my opinion. Would I race the IOM TT. No. But I know a few that have, and ALL competitors there have my utmost respect, support and admiration. As posted above, 'We all die, but not all really live.' Like my sig line - 'If it can't kill you, it's not a lot of fun.' |

Yes, I have looked into it and the appeal is having a bike that has been to the IOM. The bikes are a bit more expensive and to register them in the US you have to put US emissions on them, and sometimes other modifications to bring them through customs. A LOT easier than importing a car though. But weigh that against shipping your bike there and back and it starts to make sense. There are lots of considerations, registration to be legal there, insurance red tape. It is easier to just buy one there and ride off the lot with a temp tag and have the dealer keep the crate and break it down and ship it for you afterwards. It is expensive, no doubt about it. But it is less trouble. When I do it, I am going to buy the same Suzuki model that I already ride here every day so I will be familiar with the handling characteristics of the bike. I will probably sell my existing bike to help finance the trip. It is once in a lifetime, so go big. IOM isn't the only stop on the trip, we have planned to invade Europe. |
