Can anyone recommend safe and reliable software for converting soundtracks on Youtube clips to an MP3 format?  Looks like lots of free software available on the internet but a bit wary of selecting something infected with malware.

Realplayer is what I use. It also let's you rip the full video so if you want the video as well as audio it works for that. Then you convert the video to audio only, then either keep or delete the video file.

you can record any sound coming through your soundcard without downloading the actual target...as long as your internet connection allows a good stream.

Comes in handy on video sites that various downloader programs don't work on.

vidtomp3 used to be reliable, but lately every other upload click results in an auto download of malware or a redirect. I still use it though since im pretty good at blocking that sort of thing.

Audacity works, too.

Open the video and it will import just the audio tracks, then you can export to MP3.
