Was at the doc this morning and he's telling me they're doing DNA analysis work-ups on people to help better choose medications based on the DNA profile.

Here's the kicker...I have private insurance (employer plan) and he's telling me Medicare is paying for everything 100%. That's when I got suspicious about the government paying for DNA analysis on people. Has anyone else been offered this "free" service by their doc?

Refuse it and get a full copy of your medical records to audit to see if it was done without your consent. Be very aware of the fine print of what you sign for medical releases or you may inadvertently give consent.

The VNTR database results are completely different from metabolic/genetic disorder screening test results.  If merged you'd be comparing apples to oreos.

Warfarin genotyping has been going on for some time.  There are tests for other gene/drug combinations as well.  Basically they look at the signature (alleles) of the metabolism genes you carry.  Some alleles form an enzyme product that degrades the drug faster than other alleles.

Think of the enzyme like a car.  They look at whether the car build spec (gene allele, your DNA) is for a Ford escort, a mustang, or a GT40.  If your allele make the fast degrading enzyme then you need a higher does of drug to achieve the same effectiveness as someone with a slow degrading enzyme.

I was in the .mil in the early 90s.  one of the very first things that happened to me at 30th AG at benning was swabbing the inside of my cheek with a 8 in long cotton swab.  so they got it from me already
