Probably old Russian, maybe.
" Observers following the conflict noted that ISIS militants, when they seized the air base Sunday, also captured quantities of sidewinder missiles and shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles (MANPADS), as well as military aircraft, although few believe that ISIS militants would be able to make use of the latter.

All they need are some sympathetic pilots to make use of those birds.  Al-Qaeda flight training might not have included landings, but there are probably a lot of muslim ex-military, airline and civil aviation pilots, and you don't need a whole lot of them to make use of a handful of aircraft.

spares and competent jet-rated ground crews will probably be harder to come by than pilots who could check out on on ex-soviet warbirds.

Here's the problem... While your average ISIS Derka probably couldn't make use of a Stinger or Sidewinder, they have the $$$$$$$$ to find someone who can to work it for them.

Once you have $$$$$, you can get expertise... Then all you need is access to material.

They have all of that.

They'll fuck this up. Even the most retarded of government leadership in the US would be able to get a few operational planes in the air, and get some attack capability with what they have, yet they can't seem to do anything with the vast sums of money and hardware they've acquired. (In regards to air power.)

I'm sure they'll do something terrible with it soon, but how they've managed to not get anything operational with what they already have astounds me.

However, maybe I'm missing something.

I don't think they'll be flying drones at a low enough altitude to be within range of any type of MANPAD.  Probably the same for any type of air to ground attack missions manned aircraft will be flying as well.

Now, an airliner?  That's a different story.

Assad doesn't have stingers. The battery coolant units needed to use a stinger have a relatively short shelf life anyway. In the off chance ISIS got their hands on a functioning stinger they would need training to use it.

ISIS has a whole bunch of computer guys and engineers in it more than competent of manufacturing a battery solution. They already have one workaround utilizing a motorcycle battery. These are not dirt farmers, they are (in some cases with degrees from the US and Europe) engineers, computer guys, ex military, and machinists. Of course there is a large rabble involved, but don't think they don't have complex manufacturing experience among them.

I was trying to convey that they will have better luck shooting those MANPADs at airliners that are taking off or coming in on a landing approach.

ETA:  After reading what I said again, I have no clue how you got that I said "drones fly lower than airliners."

I don't know. I've been up all night. My comprehension is near zero.

Bullshit. The SAS guys that shot down the Puma were trained.

But since I am the only MOS qualified Stinger gunner in this thread I am just going to shut the fuck up since all the experts have arrived.

I'm guessing those fucks don't have a lot of pilots on staff. Stingers or SA-7's are the scary part.

Fuck ISIS and their friends.

Assad doesn't have stingers. The battery coolant units needed to use a stinger have a relatively short shelf life anyway. In the off chance ISIS got their hands on a functioning stinger they would need training to use it.

SA-7 is a real turd in comparison.

The Brits got kills with Stingers in the Falklands without being trained on them.

Well, according to wiki, the SAS trooper that was supposed to train the other guys was killed in a helicopter crash on May 19.
